In July of 1776, the delegates to the Second Continental Congress faced a decision that would change their lives and the destiny of a continent: Should the American colonies declare independence from Great Britain? The delegates knew that casting a vote for independence meant risking their property, jeopardizing their family, and losing their own lives. The vote loomed before them. Caesar Rodney, one of the delegates from Delaware, favored independence. When he learned that the vote was imminent, he rode from his home in Delaware to Philadelphia, where congress was in session. His eighty-mile ride to cast what might have been a deciding vote was a heroic effort on the part of a man who suffered from asthma and cancer.
