  • Description

A Calendar Too Crowded is a path-breaking book by Sagarika Chakraborty that aims to bring to light the numerous problems faced by the people of India, no matter how detestable those problems might seem.

    Summary Of The Book

A Calendar Too Crowded can very well be heralded as a refreshing change in Indian literature, owing to the fact that it makes no bones about the shocking and heartbreaking problems faced by the women of India, who are struggling to establish an identity of their own in the world. No matter how unpleasant these problems might seem, the author makes sure to avoid concealing any of them and she portrays them as vividly as she possibly can.

The book has been written in such a way so as to mark every event in the calendar that is supposed to be celebrated for the upliftment of women. The short stories and poems in this book each focus on one such day and highlight the real issues faced by women in Indian society. One of the stories is titled Barren Yet Ploughed, and focusses on the plight of a woman who is shunned for supposedly being barren, even though the real problem lies with her husband instead. Through the course of this book, the author also throws light on the problems faced by women who are forced to join the sex trade industry.

Behind Those Whispers is a poem based on a fictional account of a girl who remains distant in every way from her loved ones, only because she is made to understand that she suffers from dirty blood during her menstrual cycle. This has been portrayed in the light of International Women’s Day. These accounts, and many more help to familiarize the readers with the numerous harrowing problems faced by women in India today. Although the stories present in this book are fiction, the readers can very well relate to them, as they depict events that do happen in real life.

Not to be missed..Sagarika's soul-stirring stories..

I'm still in a state of shock since I started reading this book..My postnatal blues got deeper with it at the start, but depth means end for many pains..depth means realization of many truths..
I could not shut my eyes from the bitter reality around me, so harsh for so many women in this country.
I am relieved only after finishing this book!!
Sagarika Chakraborthy's debut book is a wonderful read. Its intellectually stimulating, brings tears to your eyes, both of sadness and joy. Its really un...

    voice of woman!!!

Great job done by sagarika. This book really forms a strong argument for women empowerment and her position in the society. Stories cover the roles which a woman plays in her entire life cycle. I like the expressions used by the writer to express the feelings of woman in different situations, like when she meets her first crush when she has already spent considerable time with her husband. Writer also presents social condition of woman, and her rights have still a long way to go. She also exp...

    Heart-touching and compelling!

The 'calendar' referred to in the title represents all those days of the year, which are dedicated to women. Each chosen day is associated with a story that undermines the exact cause the celebration is meant to uphold! So the question is, "are these dedications symbolic or do they have any significance?"

The stories are so real and so hard-hitting that you wont realise when tears start rolling down your eyes! It's apalling to see how helpless women feel in this contemporary world!

    The lan...

    Loved it

"This book is a very interesting guide an “all about woman” phenomenon. It not only takes you through different stages of a woman’s life but also gives tells you how a complete calendar is dedicated to celebrate women and make people aware about the evils a lady faces in her lifetime.
I felt very amazing when I got to know that there are almost 30 days in one year dedicated to woman. And this book has very interestingly spun short stories, poems etc. around these days. This format of the bo...

    My fav Gift !

This book was gifted to me by my aunt and I must say that this has been of the best gifts ever! The book A calendar too crowded thought out its stories and poems maintains that element of beauty yet it gave me goose bumps with the issues it has raised. Some of the stories had me in tears and some in shame that I live in such a disgusting society. Yet, after reading some of the stories I had this smile of hope and satisfaction. Some protagonists inspire on not only how to handle the subjugatio...

    Superbly Written

The book is superbly written! And its format …is so unique. The division of stories for each month and listing of the days which are celebrated on women is so creative. I was first amazed to see that so many days are celebrated for women…but then I became sad to realise that even after so many days are there to mark the issues and to create awareness, the degree of apathies has only increased! We only see the official ads on newspapers and some leaders of our having few events on the days … n...

    Awesome Reading Experience

Well done Sagarika Chakraborty! This book has been written so amazingly. The most important element of this which I like is that apart from highlighting the issues concerning women she has also taken the opportunity to express her thoughts on even bigger issues such as nationality, love, life, relationships, education system … And many more! This book although is small but it has touched upon sooo many topics. You learn so much from this book. The story “An Equal Friendship” is the best I ha...

    Remarkable work !

A book with so different a format, considerate issue, fresh take, amazing writing !!
The book “A Calendar too Crowded” is a very daring account which bares all the phases, sentiments which a women has to go through in her life. With lines like “It was his superficial presence through the two pinches of vermillion that had been her strongest armour” author also makes statements which are true to the Indian values for a lady. Author talks about the sacrifices and sufferings as well as the value...

A must read for both men and women

“A Calendar Too Crowded” is not just a collection of stories but a piece of literature with lot of research work involved. Some stories are grey with no silver lining and some are positive example is “selling a Body to Gain a Mind’. The book is a good read for both men and women. It covers a range of issues faced by women in our society. It raises tough questions and awareness about several complex issues women goes through at home and outside world. A Must Read!

Okay I have never reviewed a book before but I am doing it for the first time, for Sagarika.

The first thing that came to my mind after reading this book:
    A-W-E-S-O-M-E!
The stories are woven so beautifully that a reader cannot get out of it, the stories revolve around your mind and you cannot help but appreciate the beautiful language. The 12 chapters represent the 12 months of an year and it brings out several phases of a woman's life.

The characters speak to us and the stories are ver...
