Deceptive

This is an entry level DSLR, and for someone starting out on photography, it is a reasonable buy, though I must say that having handled the Nikon at the same price range, the Nikon felt much better build-wise. The Canon is quite 'plasticky'.

I bought this camera afetr quite a bit of research on the Canon website and elsewhere. Most places, INCLUDING THE CANON WEBSITE, BROCHURES AND EVEN THE IN-BOX MANUAL mentioned this camera as having an IS lens, but IT DOES NOT COME WITH AN IS LENS... a good bit of deception from Canon, that.

I have also run into probelms trying to use the camera with lenses other than the kit. It seems to have major compatibility issues (and keeps displaying errors) with even the most common, basic lenses.

Overall, for the money, and based on my personal experience, I would advise opting for Nikon instead of Canon.

Fair Enough

For the price it's a bargain. Does everything you need a dslr for. Yes, you got no video (which is a feature that may end up to be useful, owing to the range of lenses one can get in a dslr), the iso range is fairly small and there ain't no IS on the kit lens. All in all, 1 year ago this was the thing to buy but, now why not spend a bit more and buy the 1100D. and If you're looking for something even sweeter, then Nikon's D3100 fits the bill perfectly. This camera then, is what you buy, when you got not a single penny more to spare, if you do or could do later, then jump up a step. You wont... ()

P.S. I always wish my 1000D felt as good to hold as a nikon D3000.

Recommended- Value for Money

Canon 1000D is definitely a recommended option for anyone who is upgrading from a point and shoot to a DSLR, who is keen on learning the various aspects and capabilities of DSLRs.

Though the specs might not be appealing on papers as compared to many other DSLRs which you can get with a few more hundreds of rupees, it would definitely serve the purpose for any newbie into DSLRs.

My personal experience with this camera has been wonderful, having carried it around for almost 4 years now.
No maintenance till date.

No maintenance till date.
You get to learn all the aspects of an SLR , not to mention the decent color reproduction and good contrast capabilities.

The 18-55 stock lens is good enough, but make sure you get one with the Image Stabilization[IS] option in it.

The whole package is definitely a value for money.

Good to start

This is the best entry level camera. This was my first camera and it is wonderful camera to start with.
The first point is that it is currently the cheapest DSLR, the only other one in this range is Nikon D3000. The biggest drawback in that is that it has CCD sensor while canon has CMOS sensor. Also one more draw back is in Nikon D3000 you can set AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing). If you are looking to shot HDR pics then you will feel the loss.
Canon 1000D comes with both IS and non IS kit lenses. It would be better if you can choose IS lens.
