excellent camera

I had 4 requirements from the DSLR I wanted to buy
1. Articulated/Vari-Angle LCD screen(I had this in a previously owned camera and I will never buy a camera without this - it is VERY VERY useful) - this eliminated all Nikon models and 550D. The only choices were 600D and 60D

2. Good battery life (I use live view (zoomed) for good manual focus and for this, good battery life is a must). This eliminated 600D as an option - it has a bad overall battery life. On the other hand, 60D has LP-E6 battery that is very good and gives a clear indication of remaining battery life. For videos, good bat...

3. Different manual controls for aperture and shutter speed - 60D has a finger dial for shutter speed and a separate wheel for aperture - though this is not a big deal, I find it very useful. This also makes scrolling through menus easy and fast

4.1080p HD video recording at 30 fps - I wanted to use this camera for stills as well as videos and I know for a fact that DSLR video quality is better than any camcoder at the same price range (550D, 600D also have the same video quality as 60D - but remember you need to use live view for this and that drains battery) Sony was an option here - but none of the Sony cameras have the vari-angle screen as good and useful as Canon.

60D is great with all the above and I chose it. I would have gone for 600D - but didn't because of battery life.

If you prefer to focus/shoot using the view finder, 60D has a LCD panel on the top that shows all info - thus completely eliminating the need for looking at the screen and multiplying the battery life - very useful when there is less battery remaining.

Sensor performance is good at 3200 ISO also. This is great for low light photography.

The 18-135mm lens is decent and useful for various situations. Though this makes the cost 20K more than the 18-55mm lens, you will hit limitations with the 18-55mm lens very soon (3X vs 7.5X zoom). And I don't want to be changing lens whenever I want to shoot something far. I brought a prime lens (50mm ef 1.4 IS II) along with this to compensate for what this lens can't do (low light performance is bad - can't expect at this price though).

AF is a bit slow - but that depends on the lens also and trust me - if you get used to manual focusing, no camera can beat that and you will never use AF again. But again, if are not an advanced user (Eg: prefer to shoot in auto mode?), this may bother you a lot - go for a Nikon or Sony DSLR.

To the gentleman comparing the 60D to 5D

I'd just like to point out that the 5D is a significantly more expensive camera than the 60D. The 5D Mark II is about 1 lakh 20 while the 5D Mark III is 2.5 lakhs. One is semi-professional designed for enthusiasts, the other is a professional level one, the real deal with everything plus the kitchen sink thrown in. Why bother comparing apples to oranges.

I've used this camera quite a bit and I have to say this really is one of the finest kits Canon ever came out with. It's like this hits the sweet spot. Combining it with the 18-135 lens is a very good idea. The difference in quality is per...

I've used this camera quite a bit and I have to say this really is one of the finest kits Canon ever came out with. It's like this hits the sweet spot. Combining it with the 18-135 lens is a very good idea. The difference in quality is perceptible. It is just superior to the 18-55. It doesn't hurt you can do more with it, but even photos in the normal range seem to benefit from it.

At this price point there really isn't anything like it. For someone who wants a camera you can play around with....this is the beginning of the dream. If you're not going all the way for a professional level camera, I mean anything short of that, you should get this one.

If you just want a really good camera without the hassle at this kind of quality check out the Sony RX100. It's probably what most people should really buy, if you're not going to be hardcore about photography, it's not worth buying a DSLR that's just going to be lying around, once the initial novelty wears off. They are big and clunky to carry around, no denying.

If you want to read proper camera reviews, really in-depth ones, head over to the dpreview website. They're hands down the best.

The 5D though...that's a different story. Another level altogether. Unless you have that something that the master photographers have....that ability to visualize...you're not likely to get anything out of that camera that you wouldn't out of a 60D. And much more easily. It would be like driving a Ferrari without traction control!

My two bits!

Carefull while deciding

Canon makes so many promises while putting new products to consumers. Finally it has ended up making professional camera for non-professional users thereby expanding their horizon of buyers. Look at this view finder in 60D. Pathetic. You cant focus the image. Now beat me with counter arguments like it has so many cross point focus blah blah. For professional use, manual focus is most important. If image in view finder is very small, you cant be sure if you are on right focus. For professional use, manual focus is most important. If image in view finder is very small, you cant be sure if you are on right focus. There is a difference of mountain between view finder of 60D and 5D. Later is so clear and size is so useful while in 60D you have to use auto focus only. Ofcourse, if you dont mind depending on auto focus, this is a great camera. Another caution, dont get hipnotized by tilt display. Very rarely you will find it useful. Nevertheless, that rare application will make you happy if you own this. Other than that, you can close the display backwards so that you feel safe while putting in your backpack.

Last words: I own this camera, I am happy with everything of it except view finder. It can take both usm and EFS lenses. That means you dont have to shell out your hard earned money for that red ring around the lens. Well, unless you are the professional photographer to show off to your client. If canon makes the view finder of this DSLR useful, I would rate it as a perfect one.

Awesome one..

I have used Nikon DSLRs say D5100, D7000. Being SLR they really provide good picture but the clarity and dynamic range stuck somewhere. Canon is far better as far as color depth and clarity is concern; EOS 60D is a great one provides outstanding image as well as video. Although AF point is very few (9 AF-points) if compared with Nikon D7000(39 AF points) still autofocusing is faster with respect to D7000. Over all it???s a complete package, you won???t ever regret if you buy this one. Also the price has been dropped by 10K. So why thinkin go n get it and find your own world of imaging.
