Canon PIXMA MG3170 Multifunction Inkjet Printer

Ive used the word non-expensive because the word 'cheap' has a complete different meaning in india.

In general I dont use the printer much, maybe a few prints in a month. So I used to disconnect my whole printer are lock it away. Then i had to free the PC desk, connect power and USB to the PC every time I has to use it.
SOLUTION : MG3170 : This is the PERFECT solution to that, wireless printer makes it EXTREMELY easy to print in a hurry. All i have to do is connect the printer to the nearest power source and print print print.
With wireless routers nearly in every house you dont need anything else. Wireless setup is quite easy.

But I would say that the print quality is not that good, compared to my last HP F380 this printer's quality is 8/10

But with my need of prints im not much concerned with quality, If you want better quality and wireless go with some other expensive printer.

NOTE: I've praised the wireless feature most, but it also can be connected by a normal 2.0 USB.

Here's why you should buy this printer

1. Great Wifi.
It is also compatible with all wifi devices. Ipad, iphone etc (Airprint)
The main computer does not have to be on, to print from an iphone etc.
Supports Wifi scanning from iphone as well.

2. Auto duplex printing
Huge for saving paper (and trees)
Did'nt even know this feature was available in such low end models.
This was a deal clincher for me

3. Price
You will not get anything comparable in this price range. Others offering similar features are approx 10K (that too without auto duplex)

Thinks that go against this printer

1. Running costs
Cost per page is very high. Double of other options.

2. Setup is not easy
Using a cable solves some issues but setting up over WiFi can be challenging.
I have still not been able to scan over wifi using my PC.
Ironically, scnanning over wifi using my iphone was a breeze with an app i downloded seperately.

Verdict: if you use this for basic stuff (print tickets, occasional photcopies etc) then itsa no brainer.
You need to decide if you want to pay double upfront to save running costs later or or vice versa.

I chose the former!

I bought this printer mainly for the wireless function and it has been a very good experience so far. I have a Linksys WRT54G router and the SES (similar to WPS) function in the router did not help in auto configuring wirelessly. Had to connect usb cable to setup the wireless. You need to select the "Connect using wireless" option while installing the driver (though you connected using USB) for the wireless configuration utilities to be installed. Once the wireless is setup, USB connection is not needed. I tried from Windows XP, Ubuntu and it all works fine.

Pros:
Very good color prints.
Scan to pdf.
Scanning function even without the cartridges installed.
Independent operation (color/b&w copying) without the PC.
Duplex printing (prints on both sides automatically)
Linux/Mac drivers available. I am using the wireless scan/print functions on Ubuntu.

Cons:
Cartridge is a bit expensive (only reason for the 4 stars). refill seems to be possible.
I bought a black one and the printer is super glossy, becomes dusty in no time. White would be better in that respect.

I bought this printer a month ago and it surpassed all my expectations.
Right off the bat, it is very inexpensive as compared to other wireless Injets in the market. I had my apprehensions about whether such a cheap wireless printer be any good. It was totally worth the risk.
It is very easy to setup even a child can figure it out, installing the cartridge can be a bit tricky but keep your cool and you'll get around it.
The copy feature should also be lauded as it is just a open touch function and has seprate buttons for copying & printing in black or in colour. The scan function is pretty decent as well.
Kudos to FK for speedy delivery. Sidenote-Why don't you guys stock ink cartridges?
