There is an ancient saying that when lovers fall out, a plane goes down. This is the story of one such plane. Why did a Hercules C130, the world's sturdiest plane, carrying Pakistan's military dictator General Zia ul Haq, go down on 17 August, 1988? Was it because of:
1. Mechanical failure
2. Human error
3. The CIA's impatience
4. A blind woman's curse
5. Generals not happy with their pension plans6. The mango season Or could it be your narrator, Ali Shigri?
Teasing, provocative, and very, very funny, Mohammed Hanif's debut novel takes one of the subcontinent's enduring mysteries and out if it spins a tale as rich and colourful as a beggar's dream.

Highest society assassination, conspiracy theories, dark sides of a nation's army, and a kick of comedy when you least expect it - This book is rich and green like a nomad's dream. From the vivid description of the insane paranoia of Gen. Muhammad Zia ul-Haq to the obsessive celibates in the army, this book has a notion of pace and thought throughout itself. The list of arising suspects out of numerous theories of the accident lists a blind woman who has been sentenced to death, a Leftist street cleaner, an army of tapeworms, a crow, a snake and a young trainee in the Army. Intrigued?
After a long time, there's a fresh comic perspective given to the regulations of the army and philosophies behind individual piety. My verdict: If you are a fan of tastes of Mark Twain or Anthony Burgess, this is one book you would not want to miss.
An explosive book which reminded me of Catch-22 all the way in it's easy humour and scenario. Hanif writes with a flair which just pushes you to go on from one page to the next. The character of Ali Shigri also reminded me of the Yossarian from Catch-22 with his ability to get into trouble and wriggle out of it and yet Shigri has his own personality quite different from Yossarian.
The plot is intricate and Hanif writes a very believable fiction. All in all, a must read
A great thriller woven around a true event..makes you wonder how much of it is actually true..may b all of it. The author has an excellent sense of humour..some pages leave you laughing aloud. The best part is the title. You DONT realise the true meaning of the title till you read the whole book and then you actually hv a good laugh!!
Hilarious work of fiction, with a political assassination as a backdrop. Sporadic doses of strong sattire. Conpiracy theories behind the killing galore. The character Ali Shigri is now one of my favorite fictional characters! Highly recommended.
I purchased the book from flipkart after checking wonderful reviews of it, but I was disappointed. The book is humorous, but only for intelligent heads, and I am not one of them. I found it boring and dragged to complete it. But some incidents are good, so 2/5.
