Book Summary of The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in Rye is the ultimate novel for disaffected youth, but it's relevant to all ages. The story is told by Holden Caulfield, a seventeen- year-old dropout who has just been kicked out of his fourth school. Throughout, Holden dissects the 'phony' aspects of society, and the 'phonies' themselves: the headmaster whose affability depends on the wealth of the parents, his roommate who scores with girls using sickly-sweet affection.

Lazy in style, full of slang and swear words, it's a novel whose interest and appeal comes from its observations rather than its plot intrigues (in conventional terms, there is hardly any plot at all). Salinger's style creates an effect of conversation, it is as though Holden is speaking to you personally, as though you too have seen through the pretences of the American Dream and are growing up unable to see the point of living in, or contributing to, the society around you.

Written with the clarity of a boy leaving childhood, it deals with society, love, loss, and expectations without ever falling into the clutch of a cliche.

About the Author
J.D Salinger was born in 1919 and died in January 2010. He grew up in New York City and wrote short stories from an early age, but his breakthrough came in 1948 with the publication in The New Yorker of 'A Perfect Day for Bananafish'. The Catcher in the Rye was his first and only novel, published in 1951. It remains one of the most translated, taught and reprinted texts, and has sold some 65 million copies. It was followed by three other books of short stories and novellas: Franny and Zooey; For Esme with Love and Squalor; and Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters/ Seymour – an Introduction. All four of Salinger's books are published by Penguin.

The marvels of simplicity

"You know what I'd like to be if I'd my choice?" "I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if the kids are running and they don't look where they're going, I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I know it's crazy but that's the only thing I'd really like to be. I know it's crazy".
That's the essence of The Catcher in the Rye. I needn't tell no further. - Rojikanta

Great book, shabby service

The book is an absolute wonder, the only thing that mars the beauty is the shabby service by flipkart. When I ordered the book, the delivery time was supposed to be 2-3 days, instead it came a week later, which isn't really appreciated by me. What happened flippy? I've ordered earlier from this site and the service was just great....hope that wont happen in the future....awesome book, i'd like to say, again.

"Phony",is da word.....

Salinger's creation of a protagonist with a lot of so called integrity,in an hypocritical society is indeed marvelous. The sheer simplicity will definitely grasp the readers, for they, themselves will relate their complexities and pangs of growing up with the protagonist's.Be it dealing with a phony or behaving like one at times,Salinger has written about every possible thing through the medium of confessions by Holden. Therefore,I won't say that it's a must read but is indeed worth reading.

A novel far ahead of its time.

While going through the first few pages of this wonderfully well packaged book, I coudnt' help but wonder if I was really reading a novel set up almost 60 years ago. The language is so contemporary, you almost feel its a blog! But then, what you have in your hands is anything but the ramblings of a disgruntled young man on the web.It is intricate and meaningful. Black humour at its very best. An amazing piece of literature.

Slow Addiction

Hi,

Beautiful, different and addictive book.
Interpretation of an adolescent's mind is unmatching.
This is one of those books which take you over slowly, but once it is on you, you can feel the thought process of Holden (protagonist) running in your mind, and you start finding similiarity with your adulthood behaviour.
You will not put down the book till it is finished, once you are in the grip of it!!!

Enjoy it.
