Chandragupta-Path of A Fallen Demi-God (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.127

A far cry from a typical history book, this text abounds in scholarly facts and is a delight to read. The writer has taken a different path and done justice to the magnetic figure that Chandragupta Maurya was, instead of simply presenting him in a historical light.

Summary Of The Book

Historically and otherwise, Chandragupta Maurya is definitely one of the more interesting individuals from the history of India. His life and time has been a topic of much debate, discussion, and even controversy.

Born in a relatively unknown village to a farmer, he was raised in conditions of extreme poverty and destitution. Later in life, he went on to serve as an attendant at a palace in the city of Pataliputra.

As the story progresses, readers are introduced to the point where Maurya turned his life around and became king. The book takes its readers through an alternate world - over the plains lying east of the River Indus and the many wars and battles fought at Kalinga. Chandragupta: Path Of A Fallen Demi-God provides extensive information about the Mauryan Empire, which was spread out over the Indian subcontinent.

Readers can witness the change in the king’s mindset too, as his waning interest in statecraft and peaking interest and subsequent submission to a life of spirituality is depicted.

Published in the year 2011, the book was met with positive reviews, mostly owing to the fact that books about Chandragupta Maurya are mostly historical accounts that don’t do complete justice to the man himself.

Gripping Story but UNPARDONABLE typographical and grammatical errors

No doubt a wonderful story with a peek into the private life of the great Mauryan which I'd never knew about. One of the many versions of Chandragupta Maurya's life I have read. But this is no way to release a book without any proof reading done at all! How else can one explain the incredible number of errors that torture the reader throughout! I mean the author must have had some real urgent need for money to get this book published at the earliest.

While I appreciate the ability of the author to hold the readers' attention throughout the story; the readers expect good quality books from Flipkart which unfortunately is not the case here. I recommend 'Chanakya's Chant' any day to readers wanting to explore the Mauryan times for the first time.

A Historical Fiction

Looking at the of the book, I thought it would be a historical treatise for scholars than for casual readers. I am glad that I was proven wrong. The only reason I picked up to read it was because of the cover looked mystical. It is as unputdownable a book as I have ever read by an Indian writer. The way the author builds the aura around Chandragupta, his might, his sense of propriety and cunning is mindblowing. Thrilling is a word one would not often associate with historical biographies. I wonder if Mr. Pillai has ever visited any of the places refered in the book; because the journey seems to be real. Thanks for taking us to meet the Golden Sparrow.

Pathetic Writing Style

Since history is all about presenting facts the author has no role in the plot. All tiny bits and pieces of history have been put together in this book. But what really disappointed me is the writing style which is mundane. There are too many instances of spelling mistakes which I am not sure is because of the poor review of the editing team or the printing press. There are too many contrasting stories on Chandragupta Maurya from what the Internet offers on the very same person.

Great Content - Disappointing writing skills

This is a great read if you are a history buff - great characterization, quotes and seamless weaving of plots.

What was disappointing for me was the rather poor usage of the language which is definitely an editorial nightmare. Also the author keeps repeating himself and draws reference to a previous incident which makes me believe that the author thinks the reader is not very smart in connecting the two - it isn't an epic or a big book where a reader might be lost in the myriad of plots.

I personally enjoyed reading this book and I would strongly suggest everyone to read it.

A story so inspiring, every Indian should read.

This book was recommended by a friend since it was making waves on the social networking websites. It has everything from well-developed characters, historical authenticity, battle strategy, philosophy, unlimited thrill and above all a message of patriotism. The last battle sequence especially blew my mind.

Finally we have an India author who is telling us about our roots in simple common man language. Giving us well researched material in a very interesting manner. I saw some grammatical mistakes (the editorial team and proof reader could have done better !) like others have pointed out. B...

Finally we have an India author who is telling us about our roots in simple common man language. Giving us well researched material in a very interesting manner. I saw some grammatical mistakes (the editorial team and proof reader could have done better !) like others have pointed out. But I was so absorbed in the story that it did not matter. I wrote to the author about the errors, he wrote back saying that it will be rectified in the next print lot. I just want to say, keep writing stuff like this.

Easy read

Division of the life events in small chapters makes it a very captive and easy read and also shows the evolution of a boy to a man we know as the Chandragupta Maurya. written in simple english and being devoid of boring historical terms makes it an ideal gift to young readers as well. Good story but lots of errors

The story was pacy, writing style was good, but it has lots of TYPOGRAPHICAL errors. Apart from the historical facts, it deals with the human side of the life of a SAMRAT. His ups and downs, his emotions. It was worth reading. Hope the author continues writing but has to take care of errors. (View complete review)

Good facts...but pretty drab in quality of reading

The books offers a large number of inputs but the style of writing is poor and amaturish. One would get bored correcting grammatical errors which take away the interst in the book. Facts are well placed, but at times the descriptions are just not necessary. The language uses Indianisms like "... (View complete review)
