Book Summary of In Cheap We Trust: The Story Of A Misunderstood American Virtue

About the Book What does it mean to be cheap? When is stowing money away wise, and when is it miserly? How might American interpret the economic downturn after years of indulgence and over-spending? To answer these questions, In Cheap We Trust considers our hot-and-cold relationship with thrift and offers a colorful ride through its history in America, from Ben Franklin and his famous maxims to the branding of Jews and the Chinese as cheap in order to neutralize the economic competition they represented. From Dumpster-diving and the psychology of hoarding to Americans' thrifty responses to war and recession, In Cheap We Trust teases out the meanings of the word "cheap" and explores the wisdom, virtues, and pleasures of not spending every last penny, all the while sparkling with smart, engaging writing that's well worth another precious asset-time.

I loved this book for all the things that it was that I had no idea it would be. I knew that it would speak to all those cheapskates out there( a topic that I know well), but I had no idea that it would be so even-handed and non-judgemental. The book allowed me to sit back and enjoy its various mess...more...

I picked up this book after hearing the author being interviewed on NPR. I'm not thrifty but lately we've been trying to pay down our debt and build up savings and that has meant cutting back on my spendthrift ways where I can. It's interesting how this country has see-sawed between overspending a...more...

this book is an interesting look at the entire culture of american tightwads. there's a lot of history and strange obscure facts about a subsection of our culture that is looked upon with almost universal scorn, even though it totally makes sense. i admit to being on the parsimonious side myself, ma...more...

I read the beginning, skipped most of the middle and read the end. She got off topic a bit trying to pull in lots of historical background, but it was generally pretty interesting. Some good stuff about the psychology of cheapness. I used to think I was pretty cheap until I read this. But some people she describes are just plain crazy.

Far from the "how-to-reuse-your-toilet-paper" tome on frugality I anticipated, this book was a fascinating read with compelling reasons supporting less consumption and more savings.

The first 2/3rds of the book give an historical overview of how the government has encouraged Americans over the past 200+ years to (1) be thrifty (less reliance on England), (2) consume only what the government wants consumed (war bonds), or (3) spend, spend, spend ("Don't let the terrorists win.")

Following that, easy-to-follow lessons on economics explaining the importance of savings segues into the ecological reasons for less consumption.

I highly recommend this book.
