On Chesil Beach (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.550

It is June 1962. In a hotel on the Dorset coast, overlooking Chesil Beach, Edward and Florence, who got married that morning, are sitting down to dinner in their room. Neither is entirely able to suppress their anxieties about the wedding night to come…On Chesil Beach is another masterwork from Ian McEwan – a story about how the entire course of a life can be changed by a gesture not made or a word not spoken.

Excellent Book

Although I haven't bought this book from Flipkart, I feel compelled to write this review since its one of the finest novel (or novella) that I've ever read.

The catchline "A story about how the entire course of a life can be changed by a gesture not made or a word not spoken" sums up the gamut of the story.

At approximately 180 pages the plot revolves around the story of a young couple on their honeymoon night and the devastating consequences it has on their lives just because of their misunderstandings.

The prose is quite restrained and mostly sticks to the central theme and the reader would be left wondering how such a simple plot can develop into such a complex scenario.

A word of caution though - the end is quite poignant and can move you to tears - it just reminds us of the mistakes we sometimes commit in our relationships and may trigger a sense of guilt and remorse especially if we have ever had a failed relationship.

In my view its a must read.
