Scott's original intent for these essays was to link together literary temperaments as dissimilar as those which are included in this volume and to trace the moral and religious teachings of the various writers, however, his rambling spirit took him far afield and rather than keep strictly to a sermonic theme he has done so in an incidental fashion.
