Joe Olvera is an award-winning Chicano journalist who fought many battles as a pioneering reporter in El Paso, Texas. These included discrimination, a repressive power structure, and advanced diabetes. He was El Paso's first Chicano television reporter during a time when the city's establishment was reluctant to make room for minorities. He went on to accomplish many feats as a reporter for the El Paso Herald-Post and the El Paso Times. His memorable series on immigration was entered into the U.S. Congressional Record. The constant denominator in his trailblazing work was a passion for righting the wrongs he saw, whether in Fidel Castro's Cuba or his own U.S.-Mexico border community.
