Book Summary of Chinaman

Retired sportswriter, W.G. Karunasena is dying. He will spend his final months drinking arrack, upsetting his wife, ignoring his son, and tracking down Pradeep S. Mathew, an elusive spin bowler he considers 'the greatest cricketer to walk the earth'.

On his quest to find this unsung genius, W.G. uncovers a coach with six fingers, a secret bunker below a famous stadium, an LTTE warlord, and startling truths about Sri Lanka, cricket, and himself.

Ambitious, playful, and strikingly original, Chinaman is a novel about cricket and Sri Lanka—and of Sri Lanka through its cricket. Hailed by the Gratiaen Prize judges as 'one of the most imaginative works of contemporary Sri Lankan fiction', it is an astounding book.

About the Author
Shehan Karunatilaka has written advertisements, rock songs, travel stories, and basslines. Chinaman is his first novel.

ever wondered where Malinga, murali and mendis got their actions from?

If you look forward to waking up at 5:00 am to watch test cricket in austrlia, then this book is definately for you. But this is a great book for mystery fans too, the book is revitting as it depends on newspaper reports, interviews, letters and not just on first person narratives. Even after finishing this book, I'm not sure if its a true story or not. But this book has a fascinating take on how Sri Lanka creates so many mystery bowlers.

Stunning

Suddenly out of nowhere comes an absolute stunner. Delight to read - mixing a deadly combo of cricket, investigation, national politics, liquor and betting!
It is a dense book, but the kind that you try and read sparingly lest it finishes. I will recommend it very highly to people who love the game of cricket, like to know more about our relatively lesser known neighbour, and above all are looking to have a good, engaging and intelligent read.
