Chittagong Summer of 1930 (Part - 1) (Paperback) Price: Rs.450

Relive the armed revolution led by Master-da Surya Sen.

In 1930, schoolmaster Surya Sen, affectionately known as Master-da, leads sixty-five boys to capture the armoury of Chittagong in erstwhile East Bengal and frees the town for three days. They hope to go down fighting, die a glorious death and set an example for the rest of the country. But destiny has a different plan for them, and the raid is followed by a four-year-long insurgency. Surya Sen is eventually caught and hanged?even though the British admit they have no incriminating evidence against him.

Chittagong: Summer of 1930, Part 1 brings to life the famous Chittagong Armoury Raid, led by Bengali revolutionary Surya Sen, through the memories of his young disciples and the British officers who were his contemporaries. Manoshi Bhattacharya draws upon historical records, government documents and personal reminiscences, tracing the life of the Bengalis and the British during the period. She creates a vivid picture of the armed revolution from 1900 to 1934, and brings to light one of the lesser- known yet vital episodes of India?s struggle for independence.

Having discovered her passion for history and storytelling, she has to her credit Charting the Deep: A History of the Indian Naval Hydrographic Department and The Royal Rajputs: Strange Tales Stranger Truths. Chittagong Revolution

On the eighteenth of April in the year 1930 a group of young men, some in their teens, sprang an attack in Chittagong taking the British officials and the entire white community by surprise. Shouting slogans of Inquilab Zindabad they captured the armoury, seized arms for themselves and destroyed the communications centre and other important buildings. Their leader was the fiery revolutionary Surya Sen popularly known as Master da.

Manoshi Bhattacharya’s meticulously researched account of the events leading up to the attack and the ruthless crackdown that followed is a brilliant reconstruction of the period. The language used is flawless English interspersed with Bengali words, phrases, exclamations and kinship terms sometimes in the local dialect. This fusion together with the details of food, customs, rituals and local idiosyncrasies provide the ambience and help to recreate, vividly, life as it was lived, in the first half of the twentieth century, in the villages and small towns of Bengal.

Several perspectives are provided by the author. The most prominent, as is to be expected, being that of the revolutionaries. But the British perspective also finds adequate space as does the one of the inhabitants of Chittagong who were not expressing their support openly but giving it their silent acquiescence.

The account is very fair and balanced and draws neither from crude populist sentiments nor from bare facts alone. Objectivity and absence of bias make for a wonderful synergy of head and heart in this retelling of history.

Chittagong Summer of 1930 - an armed revolution by the youth!

There are many untold stories of the movement for Indian independence. Then there are some about which we have heard only a little but they helped change the way independence movement was perceived - by the people of our country as well as the British.Chittagong revolution falls in the later category! It was led by a charismatic Surya Sen who infused into a group of young revolutionaries such a spirit, that they took on the might of the British empire and struck at its heart - by raiding the Armoury, no less! We can only admire and think in amazement at what an audacious plan they made! And right under the 'British noses'.Manoshi Bhattacharya's book brings to life those days in a fluent and superbly readable form. No better justice could be done to that event!I compliment her for the great book and look forward to another - to relive those days!
