  • Description

Chronicle of a Corpse Bearer, by Cyrus Mistry, is a poignant love story set in pre-independence Bombay. It offers a vibrant portrayal of the enigmatic city in the late colonial age and sheds a new light on the Parsi community and their cultural life.

    Summary of the Book

Chronicle of a Corpse Bearer is a novel derived from a true story. When the whole community of the corpse bearers is eschewed and isolated from society, Phiroze Elchidana, son of a highly respected Parsi priest, falls in love with Sepideh, daughter of an old corpse bearer. Corpse bearers, pretty much an invisible community in Bombay, are those whose job is to carry dead bodies to the Towers of Silence. This book is an intense tale of tragic love, which also delicately brings out the subtle tinges of the humiliation experienced by the corpse bearers and the ever-rampant existence of untouchability.

    Chronicle of a Corpse Bearer

I have always had a soft spot and special place in my heart for the Parsi "Khandhias" or pall bearers. It is very unfortunate that certain sections of our so-called progressive and educated community still treats them as outcasts and untouchables. Speaking for myself, I have the greatest respect and concern for their mental and physical well-being.
Cyrus Mistry's book although takes you back in time to the 1940's, nothing really has changed today even after more than seventy years. Kudos to...

    A Gripping read..

I must say that Cyrus Mistry has done quite a commendable job. This book kept me engrossed till the very end of the rope. I felt like I was delving into the murky depths of the age old Parsi customs and rituals. Zoroastrians to me have always been a noble class. Which led me to believe that there could be no undoing in their social fabric. But this piece of FICTION served as an eye opener for me. Hats off to the author.....

Hidden Truths About the Parsi Way of Life

To be honest, I got hold of this book, just because it had a quirky name.

But a book bought with Zer0 expectations simply overwhelmed me. The characters simply grow on you and hold your senses to the end. I had never heard of the Khandiya's in Parsi's. To the uninitiated the Khandiya's are the corpse bearers of Parsi community and are the Harijan's in the Parsi Community

The Parsi's to me are the most distinguished of people, but even they have castes and play the caste card. Something new...
