Classical Mechanics, written by Herbert Goldstein, reaches out to students and researchers with elementary and advanced concepts and theories pertaining to the subject.
Summary Of The Book
Long acknowledged as the golden standard for classical mechanics, Classical Mechanics effortlessly bridges the gap between classical physics and its modern avatar. This book acts as a foundation for advanced graduate and senior graduate students of the discipline on account of its flawless delineation of concepts, theories, explanations and various exercises.
Herbert Goldstein covers the fundamental aspects of mechanics in Classical Mechanics. The basic principles are surveyed and Lagrange’s equations are studied. Other variational principles are also dealt with.
The first chapter is titled Survey of the Elementary Principles, while the second deals with Lagrange’s Equations and Variational Principles. Noteworthy concepts and theories are covered including rigid body motion and its kinematics. Small Oscillations are also sketched out in illuminating detail in chapter six, in addition to Special Relativity in Classical Mechanics in chapter seven. The third chapter looks at the Two-body Central Force. Special subjects of study comprise the Canonical Perturbation Theory and Canonical Transformations in chapters nine and eleven.
Published in 2001, Classical Mechanics presents concepts and exercises in a concise manner. Readers get exhaustive descriptions of Hamilton’s equation of motion and the Hamilton-Jacobi theory. Hamiltonian and Lagrangian studies on fields and continuous systems are also presented in the book.
There are innumerable problems and exercises at the end of every chapter in the book. This helps students master concepts without hassles. Some other prominent areas of study in the book include mechanical systems, their properties of internal symmetry and scattering phenomena. The Lorentz-covariant and invariance are also fleshed out in great detail.
First published in 1950, Classical Mechanics has retained its undisputed position as an authority text on the study of classical mechanics. It has been the book of choice for countless students and academicians alike.
About Herbert Goldstein
