  • Description

Building on the successful top-down approach of previous editions, the Fifth Edition of Computer Networking continues with an early emphasis on application-layer paradigms and application programming interfaces, encouraging a hands-on experience with protocols and networking concepts. With this edition, Kurose and Ross have revised and modernized treatment of some key chapters to integrate the most current and relevant networking technologies.
Networking today involves much more than standards specifying message formats and protocol behaviors—and it is far more interesting. Professors Kurose and Ross focus on describing emerging principles in a lively and engaging manner and then illustrate these principles with examples drawn from Internet architecture.

    Salient Features

    • A balanced presentation focuses on the Internet as a specific motivating example of a  network and also introduces students to protocols in a more theoretical context
    • A chapter on wireless and mobility includes insight into 802.11 and coverage of ad hoc networking
    • Principles and Practice boxes throughout demonstrate real-world applications of the principles studied
    • Case History boxes are sprinkled in to help tell the story of the history and development of computer networking
    • Material on application programming development is included, along with numerous programming assignments
    • A highly developed art program enhances the descriptions of concepts

    The Best Approach

Since I was a beginner to Computer Networking, I asked around for a suggestion on picking up a book on Computer Networks. Everyone advised me to buy either Tanenbaum (which is considered a bible for Computer Networks) or Forouzan. But believe me, the Top-Down Approach is the best to get familiar quickly with this field.

The book starts with the basics of Computer Networks and then covers all the Networking layers. Further the security and media streaming topics are covered in great detail. ...

HAT'S OFF to SIR JAMES F. KUROSE and SIR KEITH W. ROSS

Best book for networking that I have ever read. Very very good concepts . This book starts from beginner level and the reader can go any level he / she wants to be. It has many references for any topic you want to read further (If this book has left something most deeper ) . Highly interactive book with easy language. It explains purpose of layers with real world examples that very well fit on technical details and takes thinking of the reader to implementation level. There is Wireshark Labs ...

Excellent book for beginner in computer networking

I first read soft copy of the book (available on their website), then decided to own it. It is the precise book on computer networking that I read. Lucid explanations.
Revised to reflect the rapid changes in the field of networking, Computer Networking provides a top-down approach to this study by beginning with applications-level protocols and then working down the protocol stack.

Best book for detailed and easy description of network topics

This is one of a best book for learning or revising network topics. It takes a detailed approach which makes the concepts easy and less intimidating.

For students preparing for CCNA, if CCNA book looks too techy and difficult then I suggest to read and understand basics from this book and then jump onto CCNA prescribed book.

I used this book for my Masters studies in US.

Good Book if you are going through a networking course

I bought this book as a reference for a MOOC networking course and it was recommended there, new edition came out recently however in core subject it won't matter much since the content won't change with time, The structure is easy to follow and is also very good for reference.
