
A Concise History of the Indian People by H. G. Rawlinson is written primarily for the use of the student preparing for the matriculation examination of the Indian universities and is based on the syllabuses issued by them. In view of the great interest in India by the English public, it is hoped that it may also appeal to the general reader who requires a simple, non-technical account of the country and its people.
The book conatins a historical account of the Ancient India covering prehistoric civilisation of India, the vedic age, the epic age, the golden age of Hinduism, the Rajput and the Tamil Kingdoms of Northern and SOuthern India respectively.
In the medieval India, it covers the muslim conquest of Northern India, 1175-1526, the Mohammedan Kingdoms, 1340-1687; the Hindu Empire of Vijayanagar, 1336-1646; the foundation of the Mogul Empire, 1526-56 and its zenith 1556-1707 and decline 1707-1800.
In the modern India starting from Early European settlements in India, it gives an account of the achievements from Warren HAstings to Lord William Bentinck, 1772 to 1835, India under the crown: from Canning to Curzon, 1858-1905 and from Lord Minto till the achievement of Indian independence in 1947.
