Concise Inorganic Chemistry 5th Edition (Paperback) Price: Rs.646

This is a concise and complete coverage of the various concepts of Inorganic Chemistry.

Summary Of The Book

This book, Concise Inorganic Chemistry, begins by covering SI units and nomenclatures in the Periodic table. Then, the subject content of the book is divided into six parts. After the main coverage, there is an extensive appendix section, a total of 15 appendices.

The six main parts are Theoretical Concepts and Hydrogen, The S-Block Elements, The P-Block elements, The D-Block Elements, The F-Block Elements, and Other Topics.

The first part, Theoretical Concepts and Hydrogen, consists of chapters such as atomic structure and the periodic table, introduction to bonding, the ionic bond, the covalent bond, the metallic bond, general properties of the elements, coordination compounds, and hydrogen and the hydrides.
Part two, The S-Block Element, covers group 1 - the alkali metals, the chlor-alkali industry, and group 2 - the alkaline earth elements. Part three, The P-Block Element, covers the group 13 elements, the group 14 elements, the group 15 elements, group 16 - the chalcogens, group 17 - the halogens, and group 18 - the noble gases.

Part four, The D-Block Elements, covers an introduction to the transition elements, group 3 - the scandium group, group 4 - the the titanium group, group 5 - the vanadium group, group 6 - the chromium group, group 7 - the manganese group, group 8 - iron group, group 9 - the cobalt group, group 10 - the nickel group, group 11 - the copper group, coinage metals, and group 12 - the zinc group.

Part five, The F-Block Element, covers the lanthanide series, and the actinides. Part seven, Other Topics, consists of the atomic nucleus and spectra.

There are a total of 15 appendices. These are A: Abundance of the elements in the Earth’s crust, B: Melting points of the elements, C: Boiling points of the elements, D: Densities of the solid and liquid elements, and E: Electronic structures of the elements.

The next five are F: Some average single bond energies, and some double and triple bond energies, G: Solubility of main group compounds in water, H: Atomic weights based on 12C = 12000, I: Values of some fundamental physical constants, and J: Electrical resistivity of the elements at the stated temperature.

The last five appendices are K: Top fifty chemicals in the USA, 1994, L: Inorganic chemicals manufactured in large tonnages worldwide, M: Minerals used in large amounts, N: Hardness of minerals - Mohs’ scale, and O: Standard textbooks.

The presentation is interesting, it is never dull or drab. The author uses the correct blend of theory and application, tilting more towards the practical rather than theoretical. This book is a good reference material for college and university courses, and can be used as preparation material for entrance exams for postgraduate courses.

A brilliant book for Inorganic Chemistry which should be read by the students.

This is surely the best and most interesting introduction to inorganic chemistry that I have come across. If this does not get you interested in the subject, I don't know what will.I have used it to prepare for entrance exams, for college and university courses and for general reading. It starts with an overview of basic principles of bonding and trends in the periodic table. The rest of the book is then devoted to the discussion of individual groups of elements. But this is no drab discussion where paragraphs with the title 'uses of X' where X is an element, abound. Lee instead focuses on the most essential and interesting properties of the elements. As the title indicated, the discussion is concise, but never compromises on the essentials. The applications of inorganic chemical science which Lee chooses are most interesting and pervade all aspects of our material existence. He gives due importance to special topics such as Pollution, Bioinorganic Chemistry, The Atomic Nucleus and Spectra. He mixes the right blend of theory and application in this work. In fact, its such a pleasure to read this book, that it actually makes good bedtime reading! Its one of those very few technical books which you can read casually. Many 'other' chemists find inorganic chemistry boring. However, an understanding of its basic principles is of paramount importance to a study of any other chemical dicipline, not to mention its inherently interesting ideas, and its application to the material world. This book shows you how.

A brilliant book for Inorganic Chemistry which should be read by the students.

Apart from providing the basic understanding of the concepts, this book emphasizes on the language used. The book is written in a simple language which is easy to understand. Students can use this book right after 10th grade. Concepts of Periodicity has been explained really well in this book,

The "s-block" and "p-block" elements are the best part of the book. The concepts of these topics have been covered comprehensively and cater to the demands for IIT JEE, AIEEE and other state level engineering examination preparation.

One of the best parts of the foreign author's book is that the authenticity of the matter is impeccable and is therefore held high even as a reference book.

a must read book to understand concepts...

A must read books for chemistry students......you'll get everything you want in this book to understand chemistry in better way....student like me who never understood chemistry was able to not only understand chemistry but to solve the numric based and iit jee problems from other books and packages of reputed coaching institutes (like fiit jee, narayana, etc) after reading this book....

» better than its other edition which is for iit jee.
» better than other books of inorganic chemistry.
» text easy to understand with good illustrations or sketch and diagrams.
» recomended for students preaparing for cbse exams.

*not much problems for practice but still a must buy book.

#if you want to understand concepts in inorganic chemistry in every detail and in an easy and understandable way go for this book without any doubt.

An awesome read, must for anyone who wishes to understand Inorganic Chemistry

Got this book some time back. Its a great book with excellent contents, like the treatment of the structure and Bonds in the early chapters and then various Group elements, later on. A must, if one needs to understand Inorganic Chemistry. The author has made great effort to present the material. A little less on the number of problems / numericals, but where it misses out on problems, it makes up on the quality of the Text itself. Only thing lacking is the quality of printing. Take the Contents pages, for example. The printing of the Contents pages look like the book has been photocopied from the original and then bound together. I would expect the publisher, Wiley, to at least use the soft copy of the Text and then get it printed, like the way I have encountered on various books by Wiley, in the past. Or if required, edit the Font to offer clearer reading. One of the great books (again by Wiley) is Physics by Resnick, Halliday and Walker, where the book not only offers outstanding content, but also is a treat to read.

Such a high-quality of Text (Concise Inorganic Chemistry) as presented by the author J.D. Lee, warrants good, clear and sharp printing.

Excellent for curious readers

This book on inorganic chemistry is the best i have seen. I am myself a chemistry student and i think the book is good enough to be kept as a reference for ANY confusion. Readers will find it extremely ineresting, full of minute details (for example, the s,p,d, and f orbitals have been explained WITH their full form, namely Sharp, Principal,Diffused and Fundamental.) The book is recommended for beforehand studying for higher secondary school and competitive exams. THE ONLY DRAWBACK IS THAT IT DOES NOT CONTAIN MANY PRACTICE PROBLEMS,ONLY ABOUT 20 FOR EACH CHAPTER.
