Book Summary of Connect The Dots

Passion, ambition and success… 'Connect the Dots' by Rashmi Bansal tells the story of life through the eyes of 20 entrepreneurs who beat the odds and made it big. This work of non-fiction is inspirational for all wannabe entrepreneurs. At the same time, it should also motivate all those who seek to make their life’s journey more exciting and fulfilling.

Summary of the Book

What ties the 20 true-life protagonists of the book together is that they are all entrepreneurs – but without the much coveted MBA degree. Written in conversational form, the book is divided into three sections – Jugaad, Junoon and Zubaan. The author speaks to people from different parts of the country who have carved a niche for themselves in different areas of business.

Jugaad covers the stories of those who used grit and determination even as they observed and experimented to create a business on the road less travelled. The nine stories covered in this section give us a glimpse of the steely resolve of people who tried to do things differently from what others in their chosen industry normally do.

The second section Junoon details the growth of seven entrepreneurs who were driven by a dream or a passion. They followed their interests, did not give up on their dreams and succeeded in creating ventures that were not only unique but which successfully tapped a market that nobody even knew existed.

Zubaan gives us an insight into the mindset that allowed four extremely creative people who successfully channeled their immense talents to create a business platform for themselves. By tapping their talent successfully, these creative people become entrepreneurs in their own right.

The book is inspirational as the readers are sure to get totally involved in the unique spirit that drove these people to the heights of success. The title of the book is inspired by Apple founder, Steve Jobs' commencement speech given at Stanford University in 2005. In his speech, Jobs said, 'You can't connect the dots by looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust in something…your gut, destiny, life, karma…'

Connect the Dots tells us the story of people who trusted in themselves and grew to be truly inspirational success stories.

Great book but......

This is the first time I read a book by Rashmi Bansal as I have not yet read her book Stay Hungry Stay Foolish.

My belief is that an entrepreneur could come out from any profession, so why the author has an over ephasized angst against MBAs in particular.

Almost all the success stories are censored for the setbacks and breathtaking hurdles that the young entrepreneurs might have faced. I am not referering to the part-of-the-game kind of hurdles but those usually faced at the time of inception while breaking the proverbial glass ceiling.

I also strongly feel that all the stories are suggestive of a "one man show" (or woman so to speak). The author should also have covered the unbiased opinion of their close aides without whom the entrepreneur could not have established his/ her dream.

Taken from Steve Jobs' lecture. These entrepreneurs didnt have much idea where they will reach but were consistent and looking back now can connect the dots.

The book takes you through the lives of 20 non-MBA entrepreneurs from varying backgrounds with a few rags to riches stories. The stories of Dosa Plaza,VETA,Oriental cuisines etc are especially exciting as the entrpreneurs started with nothing and had their own ways of dealing with complex situations.
I enjoyed it more than her other book "stay hungry stay foolish". Those MBAs from IIM-A already had a good network and also the "MBA knowledge"...in this book the individuals do not have those advantages ...still they manage - that part is what makes this book more interesting.
Another thing is the language used....usual hindi and hinglish phrases... in the Dosa Plaza story the whole of "Advice to entrepreneurs" is in SouthIndian-Hindi.
Out of Rashmi Bansal's three books - this one is the most interesting.

must read before you go ahead and start a business to make a difference....

After going through 'Stay Hungry-Stay Foolish', this book has broken the myth that only MBA's can do good business. One thing I found common in all the stories was the eagerness to do something different & common at the same time, with a revolutionary idea, which changed the complete description of the particular business these people are doing. Above all, they inspire.
A must read for anyone and everyone who wishes to get into some sort of business to make a difference.

Good.. but undone by the book binding

Both the books are easy to read, and quite inspirational too.. a welcome change from the PR-heavy Infosys stories that have been doing their rounds for too long now.. a decade ago, if it was Gita Piramal, we have Rashmi Bansal now. May her tribe increase...

But the book's production quality is a major letdown.. after one read, the pages come unstuck from the paperback cover. Ms. Bansal's autographed work deserves to be treated with greater respect, and is not destined to end up as a wrapper for beachside peanuts or parshad after one read:-)

Publisher, please note this!

Cheers
