My old SMPS stopped working when I got this as an upgrade. It has got a big 120mm suction fan (from inside case to outside) but it is so silent it is very hard to tell if it is running. Startup is smooth and all Power Connector Cables though bulky, are well managed. It has a very high quality feel and finish with matt black, looks very good. It is 80+ Certified so it is equivalent to about 700 watts Non 80+ Units since there output is fluctuating whereas this will work at gauranteed 80+ or above efficiency at all given input power levels and demanded output power levels. Will easily handle a gaming system without a hitch with plenty of power, lets not consider an SLI configuration while reviewing this power supply as it cannot be accurately calculated for any power supply, the more number of cards you install, the more is the power required. But this will easily handle any good graphics card from Top of the line GTX or Quaddro etc on the top of their TDP with ample amount of power for the processor and other peripherals even if the system is running at its peak. It works over a wide range of input voltages starting from 90 volts to 260 volts, that is perfect for Indian conditions, and it NEVER gets even near to Hot. There is no CON for this power supply and the ones who still would like to list any, are fools. I'm very satisfied with this power supply, Highly Recommended!!
I ordered a Cooler Master 500+ Watt PSU from a shop that builds PCs to power a Radeon 7850 graphics card. The GX 550 is what I received.
I had previously used the PSU that came with an iball case. When the power went out and the apartment switched to generator power, the iball's PSU caused the generator power to become unstable and the power to the apartment switched on and off. After installing the CM GX550, I can now use my PC while under generator power without issue.
- Doesn't have negative effects while under generator power
- It is quiet while running
- Should be able to handle a single Radeon 7950 (or its successor)
- There is a high pitched whine that can be heard from the PSU after the computer has been switched off (the whine stops after 10 - 15 minutes and this issue may go away after a few weeks of use)
