  • Description

This book is about a murder story that takes place during the end of World War II.

    Summary Of The Book

The story revolves around the Leonides family whose head is the rich old man Aristide. Three generations of the family live together. His sister-in-law Edith takes care of the household matters after his wife died. Aristide remarries and his new wife Brenda is younger than him by several years.

She has an illicit love affair with his grandchildren's tutor. Aristide is killed under mysterious circumstances.

The first-person narrator of the story, Charles Hayward, who is a young man meets Sophia Leonides, granddaughter of Aristide who works for the foreign office when he was working in Cairo and they fall in love. When Hayward returns home he finds the obituary of Sophia's grandfather. Sophia tells her fiance, Charles Hayward that until the killer is arrested they cannot marry. Charles' father being the Assistant Commissioner of Scotland Yard, he is able to participate in the investigation with the detective, Chief Inspector Taverne who is assigned to the case.

The book has a series of characters including an old nanny, a spinster aunt, a scientist, an actress, two brothers having a strained relationship, an angry teenager, and more members of a very strange family. All of them live together in a crooked house. All of them have a cruel element in themselves and anyone could have been the killer.

one of the best by christie!

an exciting thriller, worth your time and money!
a bit slow at times..but maintains the suspense and increases in pace at the end. the characters are well explained. a clever plot which ensures that you are kept guessing all the time..and in the end announces the murderer with convincing facts.
probably would count in the same league as and then there were none which is an all time classic!

    A for Agatha ,A for Amazing !

I had only heard of Agatha Christie books from several book lovers. Now that I've read some of her books, I don't see how how anyone could dislike her work! Believe me,she's that good!
This book is definitely a nail biting read and it builds up so much tension right upto the very end and when the culprit is found, you do not know what happened and how it could have possibly happened..it leaves one stunned.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book :)

    Agatha Christie's self proclaimed best

Agatha Christie has proclaimed this book as her best work. I have read other books by Christie and this is, I have to say by far the best. An amazing story teller, Christie spins the plot around to keep you guessing. I tried in vain to figure out the truth and enjoyed the reading which kept throwing surprises. One of my best reads.

    MINDBLOWING!!

Dame Agatha Christie once herself said "Crooked House and Ordeal By Innocence are two of my personal favourites.". And now after reading this book, I must say this has become one of my favourites too. The climax has a very unpredictable twist and you keep guessing till the end. A well written and a stupendous story that ought to be made into a film. This book is definitely worth reading. And this was my first Agatha Christie book too:-D
