This is an award-winning novel by British writer Mark Haddon, and was published in the year 2003.

Summary Of The Book

This novel is narrated by a fifteen year old boy, Christopher John Francis Boone, who suffers from a form of Autism. He lives with his father, Ed Boone, in Swindon, Wiltshire. His two major interests in life are mathematics and Sherlock Holmes.

The novel begins with Christopher making a shocking discovery. He finds his neighbor’s dog, Wellington, dead, impaled by a pitchfork. The police, who are called in, initially suspect Christopher.

Christopher decides to find out who killed the dog, in spite of his father’s instructions to not get involved in other people’s affairs. His fears and his difficulties in understanding the world around him prove to be hurdles, but he still persists. During the course of his investigation, he meets many of his neighbors, people with whom he has never talked before.

He soon learns that his mother, whom he had thought dead, is alive, and is living in London. He sets off to see her. Along the way, he makes other discoveries and eventually meets his mother, who is delighted to see him. Christopher eventually starts living with his mother.

The book is not investigative fiction, but a story of Christopher and his journey of discovery. He not only finds out if his mother is alive, but also realizes who killed the dog and learns to overcome a lot of his fears.

Curiously hilarious!

The synopsis of this book interested me and I bought it and so I can say that I got more than what I had thought.I had expected this book to be a mystery like Agatha Christie or Hardy Boys since it talked about a boy playing detective but I was in for a surprise and a welcomed one at that.
This book not only brings us abreast with the complicated yet in a way very simple working of the brain of an autistic child, but it also brings out the true colors of human beings, which by the way we are all familiar with, still affects us in an unwonted manner.
By the time I had finished reading this book I was so impressed with the observations and innocent judgements of the protagonist that, I dare say, I had started cursing my normality and my non-autism!
I could conclude with a word which will be most suited-hilarious and I shall recommend readers to go ahead and indulge in this fine specimen.

Where there is Only black or white, with no shades of grey

One of the most catchy and unique way of depicting the story through eyes of a kid, for whom everything is either right or wrong, or good and bad, or full or empty. At times you feel the boy's observations are getting on your nerves, but at times, your heart goes out to his innocence and helplessness.
Worth a read, and once you finish it, you might want to read it all over again, just to re-live all the moments with Christopher, whom you'd have fallen in love with, by then.

Deceptive text that blends humour with serious metaphysical issues

I've gone thru this book and found it extremely interesting particularly bcoz of d peculiar thinking of the autistic boy Christopher and the philosophical questions slyly raised thru d story. A math prodigy, Christopher lives in his makebelief world and gets disappointed at every step as he tries to understand d outer world. Christopher thinks in images and this thought process is conveyed thru d numerous photographs, diagrams and charts inserted into the text (which is a postmodern trait). The inefficacy of language to convey our thoughts is highlighted thru various events in d story. Christopher Boone tries to be a detective and goes out in search of d murderer of Wellington, a dog, in Holmesian fashion. This novel is anti-detective and postmodern in attitude. It provides enjoyable content both to d young and d adult. Hence it is highly recommended to readers who want to laugh their bellies out as well as to researchers.

This book is unlike anything I have read, so far...

This book is unlike anything I have read, so far...

It had won many awards like WHITBREAD BOOK OF THE YEAR, GUARDIAN CHILDREN'S FICTION PRIZE, BOOK TRUST TEENAGE FICTION AWARD, etc. But the 'children' part troubled me a bit. I was not going to read a children's book. But there something, perhaps the name of the books, which provoked me to read it. So I started it and it was very hard to put the book down...

At first, this book gives the impression of a mystery story. But it is anything but mystery novel.

The novel doesn't follows a particular flow. The story is random and there is nothing particular to point out from the whole story, except for it is very informative. I mean to say it contains a lot of knowledge. The kid in the story is very weird, but the story is very interesting...

Dont mistake it to be a children's book. Entertains everyone, of every age group, equally...

Weird and interesting, at the same time...

Okay, written by a kid!

This book is definitely written in a kiddish style, and the language is also simple and totally understandable to anyone. But, when it comes to reading the story of Christopher, you just can not hold up to it as the story line is normal, and I feel its highly exaggerated by the reviews and the story introduction. Personally I did not find this book very much interesting. Only the dog mystery keeps you going to the end.

I'll rate it 3/5 stars just because the author was able to make you completely feel like a kid is writing this. However, I should mention, the writing involves storytelling with lots of "and". Like "and this and that and this then and that" and I found that to be a little annoying, specially in the later parts of the book.

This book is an award winner. I did not find it worth that much!
