Cutting For Stone (Paperback) Price: Rs.307

Cutting For Stone is a thrilling novel that revolves around the lives of conjoined twins, Marion, and Shiva, who are left by their father, as their mother passes away during childbirth.

Summary Of The Book

Cutting For Stone is set in Addis Ababa, where an Indian Carmelite Nun named Sister Mary Joseph Praise gives birth to conjoined twins at Mission Hospital, and passes away during their birth. After their father abandons them, the two are raised by Hema, and Abhi Ghosh. Hema names the children, and the two boys grow up being very close to each other, even after the tissue link between them is removed.

The boys are given a solid grounding in the field of medicine, and spend a great deal of time at Mission Hospital, or Missing as per the local pronunciation. However, as time passes, differences begin to set in between the two siblings, as Marion falls in love with Rosina’s daughter, Genet, who is a domestic helper. He intends to get married to Genet, but his brother does something that leaves him with a sense of betrayal.

Marion then decides to attend medical school, while Shiva stays at Missing. Before passing away, Ghosh had three things in mind, which he wants Marion to do. The first thing being that he should receive the best medical education. The next two things he wishes for Marion to do is forgive his brother, and find Stone, his father. Marion lands in New York, where he starts his surgical residency at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour in Bronx. The book details the path that Marion takes and how the lives of his loved ones change accordingly.

In February 2012, Susanne Bier had obtained the rights to direct a film adaptation of this novel, by the same name. Cutting For Stone has also been widely appreciated by its readers worldwide, and was on the New York Times bestseller list for over two years. This novel has also fetched the author several awards, and some of them include Publishers Weekly’s Best Books: 2009 and Indies Choice Book Award.

Tragic but still Magic.

This book drowned me emotionally. Its mentally exhausting. So much of loss and pains but still the characters move on. The God fearing Nun, the escapist Doctor Stone, the living in the moment Doctor Ghosh, the no-nonsense Doctor Hema and then the intriguing characters of the twins ShivaMarion. The writer has beautifully carved the characters.
The narration through the eyes of Marion, takes you to a journey spread across three continents over five decades. Every thing falls in place in a apt manner without being disoriented. The science of medicine, even though being so alien...

The narration through the eyes of Marion, takes you to a journey spread across three continents over five decades. Every thing falls in place in a apt manner without being disoriented. The science of medicine, even though being so alien for me, made pictures in my head. I could see "Operation 3" with Doctor Stone, operating on a patient with his nine fingers without making a mistake. Its hell of a discription for the writer to convey through Marion.
But. Yes there's a but. I wanted the writer to speak more about Shiva, the less spoken twin. I was disheartened with his sudden demise ( that was totally un-called for kind of). I wanted to see the world through his eyes, instead of Marion. I found this twin more intriguing, so I was looking for his perspective. I wanted him more in the story. Shiva was the character which made me turn the pages. What will he do? Is he going to say anything? But that was not the case.
Novertheless, this book is a masterpiece and I wish all the avid book readers read this book. This book definitely changed my perspective towards many things in my life.

Cutting For Stone-- For the pure pleasure of reading

A moving epic, as an Indian one can relate to many of the characters. The simple language which incorporates real life events keeps the reader spellbound till the end. Abraham Verghese has woven an intricate story of love, longing and loss in a poignant and simple tale.
Brings back the lost pleasure of reading and 'savoring' a real book. The recall and after taste stays for a while.

Exceptional book

I was so moved by this book that I bought 20 copies on flip kart and gifted it to the people who inspired me. This book is to this generation what Erich Sehgal's "DOCTORS" was to the previous generation. Hope it inspires many more people to be romantically involved with medicine.

A masterful story teller who leverages his background in medicine and knowledge of Ethopia

I read the book on recommendation of my brother and I found it wonderful and gripping. The author draws upon his knowledge of growing up in Ethiopia and his professional knowledge of surgery in crafting a wonderful story. A very gripping and enjoyable human interest story
