I return to Delhi as I return to my mistress Bhagmati when I have had my fill of whoring in foreign lands-' Thus begins Khushwant Singh's vast, erotic, irrelevant magnum opus on the city of Delhi. The principal narrator of the saga, which extends over six hundred years, is a bawdy, ageing reprobate who loves Delhi as much as he does the hijda whore Bhagmati"half man, half woman with sexual inventiveness and energy of both the sexes. Travelling through time, space and history to -discover' his beloved city, the narrator meets a myriad of people"poets and princes, saints and sultans, temptresses and traitors, emperors and eunuchs"who have shaped and endowed Delhi with its very special mystique- And as we accompany the narrator on his epic journey we find the city of emperors transformed and immortalized in our minds for ever.

Delhi, Delhi, Delhi – A city of love, city of hatred, city of believe, city of unbelievable. No body, except Mr Singh, could have pen down the story of a city from its birth to its end and again its recreation. It seems Delhi is just like the Mythical Egyptian bird Phoenix, he who always rebirths from his own ashes. And Mr Singh had created the history in front of my eyes. I love the city as much as I love my life and Mr Singh had provided a new angle to love the city more. A must read for the peoples who loves Delhi.
Best book I'v read as yet. What a beautiful journey from beginning to the end. Well defined female characters who are different from each other yet possess similarities. Mr. Singh has truly created a masterpiece after a long & tough research. This book book create a sense of belonging. Mr. Singh's incredible way of describing the city & his mistress Bhagmati can make any one fall in love with them. "Khushwant Singh doesn't write for himself but he writes for the readers" indeed I am agreed to this.
The most wonderful element of Khushwantsinghs writing is it cannotr be compered to any other writers writing and Delhi takes you for a ride down the lane but still keeps you very much to the present. once you start reading you are afraid it would end. faboulous piece of work to the last page.
