Deool (Movie, DVD) Price: Rs.299

Deool is a humorous take on a small, forgotten village called Mangrool that lies in the neglected areas of Maharashtra. Years of bad weather and drought has taken a toll on the spirits of people from Mangrool. Nuanced with local village politics, hopes and aspirations of youth, the film essentially depicts the irony of Indian villages.

On a usual sleepy afternoon in the village, Kesha, a herdsman, has a divine vision (or so he feels) of Shri Guru Dutta who evolves from the silently standing Fig tree. Bewildered, Kesha runs across the village announcing the appearance of lord Dutta to the passersby.

One tells the other, he to a few more. The news spreads like a wild fire. The young guns of the village see this as a long awaited opportunity to change things in their poor village. Soon it becomes a matter of interest for the media, politicians. A decision is taken. The young guns are thrilled. A life that they saw only on television, the glitters of the cities, the intoxication of youth and a lifestyle they have been dreaming off will finally be theirs. The sleepy folks of 'Mangrool' now get ready to build a huge temple of lord 'Dutta' in their village.

Note: This pack comes with a free ACD.

Reluctant before watching , now want it on Blu-Ray

Deool = Temple.
I wouldn't be caught dead watching a movie about or against any kind of temple. I just don't care about the institution. I didn't want to watch this one, because I thought it would either be about the greatness, or the mockery, of some temple.

BUT, its as far as it gets from either. Its the golden mean.

People, who don't have much, need to put faith in something higher, and believe that at least somebody has control of their lives. Keep this in mind and watch the movie and don't go "Oh, these people are so stupid to revere (pooja) a tree".

You will not only spend 2.5 hours thoroughly entertained, but also learn
Why people want temples?
Why politicians agree/oppose to build temples?
Why they are actually built"
(And the most fun part,) How they are "OPERATED"?

Keep in mind that, in our country most people not only believe in higher powers, but also in performing rituals. So even if you are an atheist or agnostic or whatever else, knowing about "Deool" is a very useful information to have.

This film will make you think about the infrastructure, the employment conditions, the local politics and the people, every time you pass a temple. It brings out the economist in me.

I DIDN'T GET BORED FOR EVEN A SECOND. That's the highest praise I can give to a movie.

Even the songs are good.(maybe except for one item song).

(PS: watch Valu(2008). I liked that one even better.)

Well-intentioned movie that makes you think

Says a humorous take, but it really is not one. You feel for the protagonist and can understand his angst. I guess that's exactly what the director wanted.

Village setting and the villager's mentality are fantastically captured. What factors drive the decision making in villages do come out and this time the medium used is building temple. The movie ends with you seriously thinking and questioning the institution & it's committees.

One thing that could have been better though is its pacing. Too little time is spent in showing how the institution is exploited. It is to the credit of the lead's performance that the intentioned views are delivered. Even the sudden push for temple creation against the wish of a person they respect could have been better caught.

All said, a good watch. You will never see the religious institutions the same way again.

A Timeless Satire

Although the title seems misleading, it was one of the reasons I was unwilling to watch this film in a cinema, but after being dragged by my mother to one, I realised my initial dismissal was entirely unfounded. This film is a modern masterpiece and an intelligent thesis on the rampant phenomenon of capitalising religion. The flaws such as loose editing and slow pacing are outweighed by a brilliant screenplay and genuine performances. If you have an appreciation for subtle social satire, which incidentally the Indian society needs in tonnes, this movie is worth owning on a DVD. Unfortunatel... ()

Unfortunately, it doesn't come with bonus material such as making of, deleted scenes or director's commentary, which would truly make a DVD even more valuable.

Words are not enough.!!!!.a beauty..must watch..100 upon 100

Just like many I too watched this movie after the National Awards.
My God...!!!...What an excellent movie
It focuses on 3 aspects.....
1)...development of rural areas in the light of globalisation....what has happened....what is needed to be done....and the gap in between
2)....use of God as a commodity in the era of Globalisation
3)....the positive and negative impact of both above...
By far a very modern and innovative concept in Indian Cinema

Deool Review

One can watch this movie once. Whether you get entertained or not depends upon the kind of films you like to watch. One thing is sure, this movie a bit shocking for typical "Masala" Marathi film viewer in terms of the story and content. For a typical religious devout person, the movie may be a bit shocking. Overall, you can watch it once.
