The Devotion Of Suspect X (Paperback) Price: Rs.269

Set in the city of Tokyo, The Devotion Of Suspect X is a Japanese thriller novel, with the plot and the characters shrouded in an aura of mystery and crime.

Summary Of The Book

The Devotion Of Suspect X (known as Yogisha X No Kenshin in Japanese) is a mystery novel. It narrates the story of Yasuko Hanaoka, a single mother who lives in Tokyo. The story mainly revolves around the battle of wits between a mathematician and a physicist.

Yasuko Hanaoka works in a Bento shop, and her neighbor, Tetsuya Ishigami, a genius mathematician, falls in love with her.

Shinji Togashi, her ex-husband, enters her life again and tries to destroy everything that she has built up. In a fit of rage and in self defense, she murders him. Cornered and helpless, she is then helped by the brilliant Ishigami, who devises a plan to cover up the murder.

Shunpei Kusanagi, a detective with the Tokyo Police, is given the task of decoding the mysterious events of that fateful day, but he is left stumped by the puzzling circumstances that he has been called upon to investigate.

Kusanagi often seeks the help of his friend, a genius physicist named Manabu Yukawa, in solving seemingly impossible cases. But this time, Yukawa secretly decides to take matters into his own hands to help his old friend Ishigami, who is involved in the mysterious case.

Kusanagi seems to have hit a dead end in solving this puzzling case, but whether the genius of Yukawa succeeds is something that remains to be seen.

The Devotion of Suspect X was highly acclaimed and won Higashino many coveted awards including the 134th Naoki Prize and the 6th Honkaku Mystery Grand Prize. It was also awarded the number one status by the 2006 editions of Kono Mystery ga Sugoi! and Honkaku Mystery Best 10, two mystery fiction guidebooks published annually in Japan. In the year 2008, it was made into a Japanese film directed by Hiroshi Nishitani. A Korean film adaptation is also in the pipeline as of May 2012.

The Devotion of Suspect X is a brilliant novel – it has terrific suspense which produces first-rate Page Turning Quality, unity of effect which engages the reader and makes it engrossing and unputdownable, a remarkable ending which stuns you and a meaty plot with analytical substance which imparts a sense of value.

This is not a hard boiled detective thriller nor is it a whodunit murder mystery. In fact, the author describes the murder in graphic detail right at the beginning of the novel and tells the reader why and how the crime is committed. As the story unfolds the “all-knowing” reader is given a grandstand view as he watches the riveting cloak and dagger action, observing the cat and mouse game as the detectives carry out their investigation and the protagonists try to outwit them. As red herrings emerge and the story livens up, the reader is kept in suspense till the very end wondering whether the detectives will be able to solve the case and catch the murderer or will the murderer be able outsmart the sleuths and escape scot-free. And suddenly, out-of-the-blue, you have a brilliant “O. Henry Ending” which imparts a fantastic sting in the tail. All these attributes makes this novel an extraordinary suspense thriller.

The Devotion of Suspect X is the best detective story I have read in recent times. I commend and recommend this book. You will enjoy reading this novel. Do get a copy of The Devotion of Suspect X. It is certainly worth having a copy of this book in your bookcase.

The Devotion of Suspect X – A Review

This is a book that comes with a lot of baggage. Everywhere you would look on the web, you would see only positive reviews and positive superlative praise for this book. Also, claims of 2 million plus readers, etc etc. had made this one of the most backed up book. Add numerous awards and the fact that since its first publication (in Japanese language) in 2005 it has already been adopted into two films.

Infact, to be honest, what really attracted me to this book was the quote on its cover "The Japanese Stieg Larsson - The Times". I am a self proclaimed fan of the writing of Steig Larsson and finished his last series on the trot. This is why I was very very apprehensive before I laid my hands on this book. I had too many questions like “whether it would be able to do justice to the tag”, “if it would be half as good as Steig Larsoon, that’s goona be great” and then some more. I also harbored certain doubts on a Japanese author being able to produce a thriller that will appeal to the global audience and not just to Japanese people.

To summarize my thoughts and feelings, I would say, that Keigo Higashino laid all my apprehensions to rest and in what a way! After I was through the first 50 pages, I could just not put the book down and take a break. I finished the book pronto (less than 4 hours for a 300+page book, my fastest so far :-) ).

I am usually a stickler for thrillers, military, action, suspense kinds of books. Hence, I lapped this straight up. Reading this book was like riding a Roller Coaster. The initial few pages are slow paced and a challenge to read probably because of new names, places etc. But, once the first 50 pages are read, there is no turning back. There is going to be no way by which one can get oneself to stop reading this book.

Coming back to the book, it opens with an amazingly crisp yet ‘full’ description of the life of a teacher – Ishigami, a divorced, single mother- Yasuko, her errant husband – Togashi, and a brilliant ‘Professor’ - Yukawa. A classic tale with a femme fatale, a genius mathematician, a brilliant physicist and his detective friend.

If you think on, then you would understand how the story might proceed. The single mother would be working very hard and supporting her daughter. The single mother is troubled by her ex-husband and the professor saves day. If this is what you thought then you are only partially correct. The best part of this book is that it is a crime thriller where we – readers are already aware of who the killer is and yet it had enough to lead readers on.

In doing so Keigo in a subtle manner introduced us to a extremely graphic style of writing. One can clearly visualize things happening. This and the overall pace of things picks up steam as we keep reading making this a compelling read. The suspense is well-balanced, and character development efficient and effective.

To sum up, this book is a good read. As always, you read and decide! My final verdict: 4.5 on 5.

Love... Devotion...Sacrifice??? or Just Crime

You rarely come across a thriller where you know who is the killer and yet you cannot keep the book till you reach the last page. The Devotion of Suspect X is definitely one such book where you gets to know that the title suits this book perfectly.

The story starts with a murder. Enters the characters Yasuko Hanaoka, Misato, Ishigami, Kushinagi and Yukawa.
In the following chapters you gets to know...

"What is tougher? To make a problem that no one can solve? Or to see the answer of such a problem that has no answer?"

What if all the pieces fit a puzzle just perfectly, does that mean that is the right way to solve that puzzle?
What if the puzzle you are solving is not the puzzle you are supposed to solve actually?

Sounds confusing??? Yes, The devotion of Suspect X is confusing, gripping and an example of how to write a thriller.

They said it was "The Japanese Steig Larsson"..however I would like to say it was a creation of Keigo Higashino and we must not compare this with other books of this genre...

In the end just one question bothered me.... "How far can one go for love especially when there is no chance of the other person reciprocating the same thing? ......... "

The Devotion of Suspect X is a story with a killer twist towards the end.

The book cover calls the author the Japanese Steig Larrson.

The novel moves like a cat and mouse game played between Ishigami the maths teacher (Yasuko's neighbour) and his old college friend Yukawa the Physics scholar who is assisting the police in nabbing the murderer.

The police detective Kusanagi does not contribute much towards the investigation except whenever his pal Yukawa drops the hints as the story progresses.

The identity of the killer is known at the beginning while the rest of the novel is devoted to dropping the red herrings to keep the police from identifying the murderer. Are they investigating the murder of the correct person or not ??.

The twist will shock you and you will see the great lengths to which Ishigami goes to protect Yasuko, on whom he has a crush.

The ending is not happy wish they would have got away with it finally.

Definitely a must read. I hope the author comes up with more such good work.

I started this book with immense anticipation; and I was not disappointed. This is a perfect book. Once it was delivered, I merely started flipping pages, and found myself unable to put it down.
This is a tremendous read and no amount of superlatives can do it justice. A Holmsian book if there ever was one. This author keeps the reader engrossed and literally immersed in the plot and characters to the detriment of very many other books of its genre.

I took a while to write this review because Suspect X has been compared with the Millenium Trilogy. So I read the Trilogy again as soon as I finished Suspect X.
There's a vast difference between the two. Whereas Suspect X is subtle and understated, the crime and the criminal being exposed in the first few pages, the Trilogy is very obvious and in your face. the development of interpersonal relationships is also definitely more creative in Suspect X, and makes the reader empathise to a much greater degree with the protagonists.
A brilliant book, with clues scattered about for those readers willing to pick them up.
Subtle! Amazing! Astounding! A thinking reader's book, a modern gem, a classic. Definitely re-re-re-re--re-readable!
