Diamonds, Old Lace and Shattered Dreams chronicles the life of Diane Marie Barham, an African American female born in the Deep South. The story begins on Christmas Eve, 1974, when Dianeas husband, Arthur, fails to come home. She drives to the jewelry store where he works and, unnoticed by Arthur, finds him in his car with his secretary, Mary Willis. Mary is sobbing and asking why he canat spend Christmas with her. Diane sits on the sofa for hours waiting for Arthur with a loaded .38 in her hand. As she waits, Diane remembers growing up in the South in the fifties and sixties, and the horrors of the 1968 race riots. The last leg of her journey includes memories of her marriage and years of physical and emotional abuse. This book takes readers on an emotional roller coaster and leaves them waiting on pins and needles for the sequel.
