The story is set in a village resembling the present day district of North Canara. It revolves around the strict Brahminical order of the village and how it affects the characters- The Udupi Pandit, his widowed daughter, the students of the gurukul, the shudra and various others. The film explores theme of salvation, renunciation and religious bigotry.
watch this movie because at one level it depicts a way of living that we, in urban locations, are miles and eons away and on another level it deals with acceptance of human fallacy. Be sensitive to the motivations of each character and this will be a meaningful experience.
Even though this film was made 21 years ago, it is oddly appropriate for our times. Especially when Amir Khan's "Satyamev Jayate" has raised the issue of foeticide in the public consciousness. Even though the main issue is of Brahmanical obduracy and the heaping of judgement on women, foeticide is also relevant. Good strong acting and direction give the film a depth and cause that might have been lost.
