Directing Operations: British Corps Command On The Western Front 1914-18

This book deals with how the role of British Corps command changed over the course of the Great War, and hence (since this is the operational level of command) how operational techniques also changed. It follows the development of corps from being a post-box with only administrative functions at the start of the war to being the main level of command responsible for organizing operations by 1917, and the changes in control or artillery which led to this. The development in the Army's ideas which such changes reflected are discussed, as is the applicability of the pre-war Field Service Regulations throughout the war. This book will be of great interest to anyone conducting research into the British Army on the Western Front.
