Marisa Montessori (1870-1952), the author of this book, was an Italian physician and educationist, born inRome. She was the first woman in Italy to receive a medical degree (1894). She founded aschool for children with learning disabilities (1899-1901), and developed asystem of education for children of three to six based on spontaneity of expression andfreedom from restraint. The system was later worked out for older children, and appliedon Montessori schools throughout the world.
