Book Summary of The Discovery Of India

Gives an understanding of the glorious intellectual and spiritual tradition of (a) great country.' — Albert Einstein

Written over five months when Jawaharlal Nehru was imprisoned in the Ahmadnagar Fort, The Discovery of India has acquired the status of a classic since it was first published in 1946.

In this work of prodigious scope and scholarship, one of the greatest figures of Indian history unfolds the panorama of the country's rich and complex past, from prehistory to the last years of British colonial rule. Analysing texts like the Vedas and the Arthashastra, and personalities like the Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru brings alive an ancient culture that has seen the flowering of the world's great traditions of philosophy, science and art, and almost all its major religions.

Nehru's brilliant intellect, deep humanity and lucid style make The Discovery of India essential reading for anyone interested in India, both its past and its present.

About The Author
Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14 November 1889 at Allahabad and educated in England, at Harrow and Cambridge.

In 1912, Nehru returned home to play a central role in India’s struggle for freedom from British colonial rule, and then, as prime minister of independent India for seventeen years, went on to shape the nation’s future as a modern, secular and democratic state.

He died in office, on 27 May 1964. Visionary and idealist, scholar and statesman of international stature, Nehru was also an outstanding writer. His three most renowned books—An Autobiography, Glimpses of World History and The Discovery of India—have acquired the status of classics, and are all published by Penguin.

Collector's item

If there is any doubt about Pandit Nehru'S true calling, this book provides the answer. Its a truly magnificient account of a man trying to understand and appreciate his motherland. Written with passion and a depth which is hard to match , Nehru delves deep into the story of his country peeling it layer by layer and holding up its glories for the world to see. Its written in a manner that only the truly intelectual can write in classy prose and in an engaging manner infused with anecdotes thereby making sure the book does not end up as a history text.
A must read for every Indian and if I could turn the clock back give me Nehru the writer anyday instead of the politician.

Every politician should read

Know about the land that give us the bread,The struggle for survival of a state, the vision of great men that gives us what we call INDIA.
I will make this book as a curriculum for a mandatory course for all citizens who aspire to become a politician if i have the authority to do so...
India can lead the whole world if we have at least a handful of politicians as this man was...
These were men who gave their time , property , money ,etc etc for us ...without them practically India would'nt have existed.
Now politicians are robbing these things from poor citizens,Its a pity , its a curse for India to lose such great men...Their services, their vision,,their magnanimity...

what a work by indian about India

India’s past; her glory, her victory, her shock, her reminiscence, her philosophy, her geography, her fate, and her everything… This is a compelling read from the man who lead India in her darkest hour; the man who was chosen by destiny to enlighten the Indians, proves himself to be an enlighten soul when it comes to know her. The history is nothing like a research material as it was intended to, primarily; ignite curiosity in a nine year old girl to know about her motherland. If you find the book bit exaggerated, forgive as it was written to make reader passionate about India.

True Masterpiece!!!

You will get enthralled by the sheer knowledge mixed with the rhetoric that this world leader possessed. The best part about this book is contionous stress on karma or untiring passion for betterment of country. An infant's adolescent mind is nurtured by its parents. Its sheer god's gift to have a parent like this man for an infant country. His thrashing of religions on basis of quiescence is amazing.

His depiction of 'Dams' as modern temples is again a work of far sighted statesman.. I think its a must read for everyone specially growing kids of generation Y..
