Disgrace (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.394

A divorced, middle-aged English professor finds himself increasingly unable to resist affairs with his female students. When discovered by the college authorities, he is expected to apologise and repent in an effort to save his job, but he refuses to become a scapegoat in what he see as a show trial designed to reinforce a stringent political correctness. He preempts the authorities and leaves his job, and the city, to spend time with his grown-up lesbian daughter on her remote farm. Things between them are strained - there is much from the past they need to reconcile - and the situation becomes critical when they are the victims of a brutal and horrifying attack. In spectacularly powerful and lucid prose, Coetzee uses all his formidable skills to engage with a post-apartheid culture in unexpected and revealing ways. This examination into the sexual and political lawlines of modern South Africa as it tries desperately to start a fresh page in its history is chilling, uncompromising and unforgettable.

Rivetting!!

Very absorbing from the very start. The author focuses on human weaknesses and different philosophies that may govern different men. One who likes different perspectives and ideologies to life must surely go for this book. Also, the style of writing is lucid and flowing. The author keeps us engrossed till the very end. Happy Reading!!

Brings the Booker Prize back some of its credibility

Take it or leave it, the Man Booker Prize lacks credibility. Or so it seems. However, books like "Disgrace" manage to salvage most of the lost credibility. Quite clearly Coetzee's masterpiece, "Disgrace" makes you think; and think hard. If I have seen an author touch that evasive trait of "humanness", it has to be Coetzee. Coetzee is honest to the core, and does not hide. Most of us do. Most authors do. David Lurie, the protagonist, is lucid. Reviewing "Disgrace" like any other story will amount to insult. Lingers on

The words don't do much. The story, for the most part, is predictable. The plot doesn't 'wow' you. The characters are very everyday; nobody extraordinary. But the magic doesn't lie in the book. What it does not do during the process of reading, it makes up when you put it down. And therein lies the magic, or even genius. To be honest, I'm confused if the book should go in to your list of 'must reads'. For it might not do anything to you, or it might do a lot to you. Nobody can say. Only you will know. Pick it up if you have the time, and patience, to see if you experience something.

deeply moving..

It's one those books that leaves a lasting impact on the reader. It's Hard-hitting, honest and unflinching portrayal of life in post-aparthied south-africa. A very vivid description of revenge for centuries of oppression. J Coetzee brings to life the pain born out hatred on one side and the the one born out of guilt. An indian reader can probably relate the book with the caste based oppression and the revenge crimes in India the recent past.Slightly depressing, but every way, a must read.

Classic fiction, without a doubt!!

From the first page itself, it submerges into the thick of things. Pace of the story is also good. The plot is based on the fear of the white minority after the era of the apartheid regime. Towards the end, the mastery of the writer comes to the fore with the deeper shades of the characters being divulged to us and in some metaphorical way, maybe we can also relate to it in bits and pieces.

After a long time, I have read a good fiction worthy enough not to be missed.

Sheer Brilliance!

Now this is what is called writing! Any self-respecting literary fiction buff ought to read this one. Period!

Have bought Life and Times Of Micheal K as well. Hope it's as brilliant as this.

Happy Reading.
