Disgrace (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.248

An English professor has been caught having illicit relations with his female students. The scandal has been brought out in the open and the only thing that will save his job is if he apologizes in public for what he has done.

Summary of the Book

When a middle-aged English professor is caught in a scandal where it is revealed that he was having affairs with his female students, he is expected to apologize. However, he does not agree with this as he thinks of it as him being used as a scapegoat by those who are trying to establish a certain political correctness. He manages to deter the authorities and ends up leaving his job and the city. He goes to his lesbian daughter’s remote farm with the intention of staying with her for a while. His stay there is difficult as his relationship with his daughter is one that is strained. There are a lot of things that happened in the past that they need to reconcile. This situation becomes worse when they suffer a violent and horrific attack. The author has used his skills to bring out the post-apartheid culture in ways that are unexpected and revealing. Coetzee has looked into the sexual and political laws that exist in South Africa in the modern times as it attempts to start afresh.

Rivetting!!

Very absorbing from the very start. The author focuses on human weaknesses and different philosophies that may govern different men. One who likes different perspectives and ideologies to life must surely go for this book. Also, the style of writing is lucid and flowing. The author keeps us engrossed till the very end. Happy Reading!!

Brings the Booker Prize back some of its credibility

Take it or leave it, the Man Booker Prize lacks credibility. Or so it seems. However, books like "Disgrace" manage to salvage most of the lost credibility. Quite clearly Coetzee's masterpiece, "Disgrace" makes you think; and think hard. If I have seen an author touch that evasive trait of "humanness", it has to be Coetzee. Coetzee is honest to the core, and does not hide. Most of us do. Most authors do. David Lurie, the protagonist, is lucid. Reviewing "Disgrace" like any other story will amount to insult. Excellent

Coetzee is a genius. Disgrace adds to his illustrious book-list; one of his better ones. Also, great copy.

The words don't do much. The story, for the most part, is predictable. The plot doesn't 'wow' you. The characters are very everyday; nobody extraordinary. But the magic doesn't lie in the book. What it does not do during the process of reading, it makes up when you put it down. And therein lies the magic, or even genius. To be honest, I'm confused if the book should go in to your list of 'must reads'. For it might not do anything to you, or it might do a lot to you. Nobody can say. Only you will know. Pick it up if you have the time, and patience, to see if you experience something.

Sheer Brilliance!

Now this is what is called writing! Any self-respecting literary fiction buff ought to read this one. Period!

Have bought Life and Times Of Micheal K as well. Hope it's as brilliant as this.

Happy Reading.
