  • Description

Dolmens in the Blue Mountain is a story that explores the meaning of life and death in relation to the migration of Kerala’s Syrian Christian community. It is also about the difficult lives of tribal communities in the mountain ranges of the Western Ghats.

    Summary of the Book

Many of us are still hoping to find different ways to get away from violence and corruption. Dolmens are single-chambered tombs that were constructed during the Neolithic period. In this book, it is used as a metaphor to explore the meaning of life and death. The book is about three brothers: one has migrated to Canada, the second finds a job in a Delhi based NGO, and the third has been asked to quit his job. Will the brothers be able to fulfill their dreams and aspirations? Will they be inspired by the dolmens that taught them how to live in harmony?

A must read book for all age groups and tastes

This is a thoroughly enjoyable ‘love story’ with a difference. It originates in a remote village in Kerala/India and progresses to different geographies to which its leading characters migrated. It narrates three unique sets of migration experiences based on an international migration to Canada, a national migration to Delhi and an internal migration to the Western Ghats Mountain ranges within the Kerala state. Each of the characters faced distinctive socio-political challenges and engaged in...

Very warm and moving intergenerational epic

Kandathil paints a hugely impressive and very bold canvas. He animates the complex anxieties in which the characters live and work. Very warm and moving intergenerational epic that confirms author’s virtuosity, boundless empathy and searing social acuity. Slow start, picked up momentum in the middle and ended like a thriller. Overall: Enjoyed every page. 4 marks out of 5.

Author narrates simple events of life to convey greater philosophical aspects of our existence!

This book is a post-modernist depiction of life from a subaltern perspective. The blue mountain represents the beauty of life we must preserve at any cost. The purpose of our life is to merge in this larger beautiful universe and for that we must perceive ourselves as part of all beautiful creations around us. The noble purpose of all literature and art forms is to show the eternal, beyond the ephemeral. Thus, works of any artist or author should be conveying the Truth as experienced by them....

A welcome change in Indian English Fiction !

Dolmens in the Blue Mountain marks a welcome change in the Indian English Literature. Kandathil Sebastian wrote an extremely realistic story which most of the mainstream writers never dared to deal with . The exploitation of the poor and nature is brilliantly portrayed with empathy and compassion. I enjoyed it very much.

I also felt the Author could have gone deeper into the philosophical aspects of some social issues at times where he could provide only a superfluous description .

    Any...

    Powerful narration of real India

I was looking for a book which tells me something different from the usual stuff flooded in the Indian fiction market. I found nothing other than re-repeated mythological stories and superfluous chronicles which celebrated value laden reporting ‘love marriage-arranged marriage’ complications.
My wait for a different book finally got over when I chanced upon this fabulous narrative of Indian society/contemporary history, from the standpoint of real life characters that belonged to the margina...

    Extraordinary story of ordinary Indians!

I just finished reading Dolmens in the Blue Mountain..what a realistic, simple but powerful narration of real India! A great story with a clear message! How ordinary Indians are crushed by powerful national and international commercial interests is brilliantly captured while telling the story of an ordinary Indian boy who wanted to make it big in Delhi. A parallel thread of story of exploited tribal India makes it a fascinating read! This book will definitely win many laurels!!!

A modern classic which thrills and also make us humane!

“An imaginative and complete book with lot of thrills, dramatic moments and plenty of humanism! It tells us struggles of an average Indian aspiring to become ‘somebody’ in life. The book captures the history of the protagonist’s 45 years of existence along with glimpses of life of one or two generations before him. The leading character is a dreamer and many of his dreams got materialized towards the end of the story, though some of them did not.
Perils of human greed is the overarching them...

An interesting new flavor in Indian English fiction

Dolmens in the Blue Mountain is a pleasant departure from the now common Indian English fiction themes that depict struggles and dilemmas of middle and upper middle class. It beautifully depicts the trajectory of the three aspiring brothers in a language that directly connects the reader with the thought process of the characters. The style of alternating between the tenses makes this book distinct from the other Indian English fiction that often relies on the power of English language to cap...

Not as good as the synopsis suggested

The fluidity in language is missing... the layout of the story seemed confused at parts... could have been weaved more securely, beautifully and fluidly given the originality of the story premise... as a result the read was dragging and boring in parts and left no after taste...
