Book Summary of Don't Sprint The Marathon

Life mimics a marathon more than it does a sprint

Obvious as that may appear, as proud and ambitious parents, we often push our children to excel in ways that may help them achieve some early successes – but may sap their stamina to endure the more difficult challenges which life may throw at them. What is more, our obsessive rush to get our children off to a good start overlooks the fact that in life, as in a marathon, an early lead hardly matters, but being too intent on coming first may leave our children lacking in many of the life skilld that a normal childhood would teach them.

V. Raghunathan, best-selling author of Games Indians Play, offers an alternative approach that can be even more rewarding: life, he avers, is not a sprint, and it does not in the long run matter very much if you missed out on the best school, college or job as starters. As long as you give yourself the time to develop your personality and skills, you will still get where you want, at your own pace and perhaps far more happily. To illustrate, based far more happily. To illustrate, based on first-hand interactions, he gives numerous examples of many achievers, famous and not-so-famous, among them N.R. Narayana Murthy, Dr Kallam Anji Reddy, Dr. P.D.K. Rao, V. Mani, Ashwini Nachappa, Ila Bhatt and G.M. Rao. For those helping their children along for success in life, or rethinking their children along for success in life, or rethinking their own approach to it, Don't Sprint the Marathon will prove an invaluable guide.

Must read for parents

A timely call to parents to let their children develop in their own time, in their own way! In an era where children are being reduced to test-cracking machines and their days being regimented into school, tuitions, extra-curriculars, this book, specially through the interviews with people like Mrs. Ela Bhatt, Mr. GM Rao, Ms. Ashwini Nachappa and others, brings home the fact that success is not about which school or college one went to, but the passion and committment which one brought to the choosen area of work.
Yes indeed, life is a marathon, and should not be treated as a series of sprints, where one is always worried if one is first, or who is getting ahead.
A racy self-help book indeed!

Not to be missed for parents around the world - recommended by a Pediatrician !

Hi,
I am a pediatrician, and I recommend this book to every parent of a 3 to 10 year old who comes with complaints about the child's lack of 'intelligence' in learning by rote.
To all the apprehensive parents worried about exam results of preschoolers, this book will give you an alternate prescription to your child's life & definition of success.
My small argument against the book is that the examples given of different people who have succeeded without a great start, become a bit repetitive by the end. Also the comparison of life with a marathon is sometimes stretched beyond logical limits.
But in the present day & age of hypercompetitive parents living vicariously through their children, this is a definite recommendation by your pediatrician :)

The following Themes are elucidated with real life examples, anecdotes and interviews in this short and important book for parents and teachers.
1.Competing with self and pacing the life over a longer term would probably make oneself happy and fulfilled.
