Book Summary of Don’t Go Away. We’ll Be Right Back: The Oops and Downs of Advertising

A book on advertising for all those who think programmes interrupt commercials.

Get valuable insights into the world of Advertising! Such as:

  • A Copywriter’s most dreaded word is ‘typo’. Like this one that crept into a hotel’s hoarding design: ‘Our restaurant has a bra attached’.
  • Service people usually get married in the morning. That way, if the marriage doesn’t work out, they still have the rest of the day to catch up with their work.
  • Pitches happen when the client realises it’s been a long time since he went to the circus, so sends word around town that he’s looking for a new agency.

About the Author
Indu (nee Venkataraman) was raised in Bangalore, on an unhealthy diet of Mad magazines since she was eight. A gold medal in journalism landed a job at Deccan Herald, but the chief reporter politely suggested she join an ad agency, seeing her excessive use of exaggeration. Indu joined JWT, moving from Copy Trainee to Vice President and Executive Creative Director, over twenty-nine years. She’s won several advertising awards.

Very Insightful...but...

The title of the book makes you want to read it. For someone in the advertising industry or someone interested in working in it, thie title is a puller. And you realise that author as some who's worked in the industry has used her experience to name the book with the right catchphrase and a nice subtitle on the cover.

About the writing, it's not completely there. But for a first book and considering the fact that a completely fact based and serious note would have been boring. Her touch of humour and the little comics have been a good touch. You can feel that the author has made her descriptions sound humorously exaggerated so that the book doesn't offend any of her own. And that..that is a very smart move.

The book is very insightful and is an interesting read. BUT I must admit it dint hold my attention. I read in 3 sittings. But again, considering i've read worse books in this category of books, I must say it was worth my money. Best of luck for future books, Mrs. Balachandran.

PS: The person above who wrote that scathing review sounds like a person who works in the industry and was offended somehow at the comical representation of his profession. All I hav to say is "Lighten up, sir! Life's too short to be irritated at every little thing." :D

An example of trying too hard!!

Bought this book after reading the glorious review by fellow stalwarts of Indian advertising. I wonder did all of them get paid to write these reviews or did they do it out of obligation. I suspect its the latter. Shame on you guys.
Now about the book, its full of cliches and forced comical situations and by the time I reached the 4th page I needed to reach out for a barf bag. A sincere advice to the author, please stick to other forms of writing, like letters to your near and dear ones so that the money spending public can be spared of these kind of atrocities.

A Rocking Ride - I didn't want it to end!

Wow. A book that engaged me on so many levels - while superficially it may seem like fun, witty and light-hearted, I couldn't help admiring how deeply insightful it was about every aspect of the industry and the characters that populate it. For a cynical, jaded, ex-advertising professional like me, it opened my eyes about how to view this world - with deep affection and candour. This book is a happy gift for anyone in advertising - and the kind of gift i would buy for non-advertising folks, for a unique perspective of what makes this industry tick, from a hugely entertaining viewpoint.

It's obvious Indu takes herself and the profession lightly, yet whole heartedly.

The Sham (sham?) review here makes no sense and seems motivated by either a very jealous writer or someone who had a pretty bad day.

Racy and Crazy

Indu Balachandran's " Ooops and downs of Advertising" is hilarious. It is written with a great wacky sense of humor. I was impressed by the author's keen observation of life and
people around her.

As a connoisseur of Humor and also as a humor writer for more than 50 years, I feel that this book, a light hearted joyous romp around the world of Advertising, is utterly delightful!. The author has put the face of a joke upon the body of truth!

The cartoons and one-liners brim with fun.

Readers outside the Ad industry will enjoy the book 100 percent and the insiders, 150 percent! I would recommend this book highly to anyone who feels life is meant for living and laughing. -- PSR

Atrociously funny!!!!!!!!

I have always envied Indu Balachandran's wacky sense of humor. She is I believe the Mary Roach of India. In DGA Indu playfully parodies the world of advertising...... being in the industry I totally agree with her playful jibes on the advertising hierarchy. For the advertising personnel and non advertising personnel this book is a relaxing read.........I totally recommend it. Wish we had such humorous takes on other professions too. Also the illustrations are fabulous and funny.........If there is ever a book in which the illustrations are on par with the text it is this........
