Book Summary of Dork: The Incredible Adventures of Robin 'Einstein' Varghese

In April 2006 Robin ‘Einstein’ Varghese, a stupendously naïve but academically gifted young man (he was ranked 41st in his class), graduates from one of India’s best business schools with a Day-Zero job at the Mumbai office of Dufresne Partners, a mediocre mid-market management consulting firm largely run by complete morons.

Varghese finds that he fits into the culture remarkably well. Or does he? Through a stunning series of blunders, mishaps and inadvertent errors, Robin begins to make his superiors rue the day they were driven by desperation into hiring him.

With things going spectacularly wrong in his professional and personal life, will Robin manage to achieve his short-term goal of being promoted to Associate in under a year? Will love conquer all and will Gouri walk with him through Dadar Department Stores with her hand in the rear pocket of his jeans?

Dork: The Incredible Adventures of Robin ‘Einstein’ Varghese is for all of those who’ve ever sat depressed in cubicles…and wanted to kill themselves with office stationery. Especially that letter opener thing.

Join Robin as he navigates his first insane year at Dufresne Partners in this first volume of the Dork trilogy.

Praise for the book:

‘A stunning new voice in Indian literature! In Dork Vadukut has written the book I’ve always wanted to write’ – William Dalrymple’s biggest fan’s youngest sister.

‘I love this book. I love its voice. I love the author. He’s like a delicate crème brulee’ – Padma Laxmi’s ex-husband’s hairdresser.

‘I read this book and instantly knew that Robin Varghese is the role of a lifetime. Inshallah I will be a part of the movie when it’s made’— Shah Rukh Khan’s dentist’s accountant

Totally timepass. Dilbert meets Mr Bean meets Don Martin. The adventures of this totally wacked out mallu MBA are ROFL funny. Einstein is as memorable an idiot as the character played by Vinay Pathak in Bheja Fry. What can I say? Read it :-)

You'll love it if you have a good sense of humour..

When I saw the book first, I thought probably the guy was testing the waters following the foot steps of Chetan Bhagat.I couldn't have been more wrong. It's a completely different book with a writing style that I'd say only Sidin is capable of. In this book your laugh riot starts right from page one (and when I say page one I mean right from the intro).

However, if you are expecting some real practicle corporate gyaan out of it you will be dissappointed, this book is meant for fun and only fun, you laugh at every page of the book. Overall an essential stuff for anyone who loves a good straight-from-the-heart humour.

A fine debut with a refreshingly different narrative

After writing a less-than-favourable review for Dork 2, I felt it only just to say what I felt about it's predecessor.

Dork was a much-awaited book by the Indian blogosphere, and for good reason. Sidin Vadukut is one of India's finest humour writers. Name one person who hasn't read his epic Travails blogpost and laughed out loud.

This book is written in the first person, in the form of diary entries. Brave move by Sidin, who has to deviate from his normal writing style and almost step down two notches to fit into the shoes of Robin Einstein Varghese. Does so remarkably well, and the book is a laugh-a-minute riot.

Yes, it's not an intellectual book. It's good timepass for 2 hours. There are some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments. Enjoy it for what it is. There are hardly any lulls.

If you want to read Sidin at his best though, look no further than what he writes on his blog (www.whatay.com) and his stuff for Cricinfo.

Sidin, what happened to you?!

Having read many other samples of Sidin's writing and having enjoyed most, I picked up this one just to show solidarity. But I'll have to admit that I couldn't hold up the show of solidarity past the first twenty pages!

The author is trying too hard to make un-funny things seem funny. I don't recall even smiling once during the twenty pages of supposed humour. However, I do remember cringing rather often. Utterly avoidable, this book!

Hilarious Story, Must buy for working professionals

The reason I am writing comments here is I just finished this book and I could not stop myself from opening my laptop and typing this.

Every character is unique and distinct, I loved it. I like protagonist's free spirit through out the book, his out of the world sense of humor made me laugh out loud many times during last 2 weeks. But sometimes I pity him for not being able to understand that others are making fum of him.

You can relate all events to your office life. That makes it a good read for working professionals.
