Through the course of Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Pink throws light on secrets to enable individuals to achieve excellence and satisfaction in this present-day world. He explains that the carrot and stick approach is outdated, citing the need for a relevant approach to get work done in the 21st century. Pink cites research studies that highlight the counter-productivity, which emerges from creating incentives. One of the research studies Pink cites, revolves around a “candle problem”, for which participants were given matches, a candle, and were required to fix the candle to the wall. He explains that those participants who were given money to do so, actually took longer to finish the task. Sam Glucksberg, the lead author of this research study concluded that the individuals who were offered money, were more focused on their reward, rather than the task at hand.

Daniel H. Pink is an author and speaker.

Awesome for HR people

If you are someone who works for a corporation that employs the carrot and stick approach of monetary compensation then this book is meant for you. Daniel Pink has turned the idea on its head by challenging the basic tenets of how organisations choose to compensate their employees.

But, as long as the task involved only mechanical skill, bonuses will work as they would be expected: the higher the pay, the better the performance.

Daniel suggests that ???if-then??? rewards are a mistake,hence, shift to ???now that??? rewards. Example, ???Now that you???ve finished the poster and it turned out so well, I???d like to celebrate by taking you out to lunch???

???Like all extrinsic motivators, goals narrow our focus. That???s one reason they can be effective; they concentrate the mind. But as we???ve seen, a narrowed focus exacts a cost. For complex or conceptual tasks, offering a reward can blinker the wide-ranging thinking necessary to come up with an innovative solution.

Likewise, when an extrinsic goal is paramount???particularly a short-term, measurable one whose achievement delivers a big payoff???its presence can restrict our view of the broader dimensions of our behavior. As the cadre of business school professors write, ???Substantial evidence demonstrates that in addition to motivating constructive effort, goal setting can induce unethical behaviour. Example, Ford rolling out cars without adequate testing, Enron going bust because of greedy executives.

Intrinsic motivators are renewable energy like the sun and Extrinsic motivators are like coal. We all know coal can produce energy much quicker in the short term, but, we are soon running out of it. Extrinsic motivators can get us through the day, but extrinsic motivators can get us through the night.

Humans as a race always want autonomy and that explains some of our bizarre behaviors.
We leave lucrative jobs to take low-paying ones that provide a clearer sense of purpose. We work to master the clarinet on weekends although we have little hope of making a dime or acquiring a mate from doing so. We play with puzzles even when we don???t get a few raisins or dollars for solving them.???

In summary, science shows that the secret to high performance isn???t our biological drive or our reward-and-punishment drive, but our third drive???our deep-seated desire to direct our own lives, to extend and expand our abilities, and to live a life of purpose.

Truly Eye-Opening. A book for the true 'People Person'

I totally enjoyed reading this book. Dan Pink has covered the topic of Human Motivation and what it should be ???Today??? in a very scientifically structured and coherent manner.

I would recommend that not only HR people (L&D teams in particular) but also ???forward-thinking??? and ???open-minded??? Leaders and their Managers read this book and to begin applying this gradually. I???m aware that change of such a magnitude may not be easy to implement right away, but envisioning the incremental benefits, a gradual change is better than no change at all.

A well written book. Intrinsic motivation is an area that is covered by many examples. The author drives home the point that every motive is not economic in nature. Thinkers and Creators do well with intrinsic motivation.

Industrial Age thinking around measurement, goals and rewards may be counter productive in the Information age. With people becoming more independent (and wanting to work for themselves), this becomes an important factor towards satisfaction.

DRIVE drives home the point

This is a brilliant work by a thought leader (listen to Dan Pink on TED talk): authoritative, current (well referenced with recent, landmark works), and at the same time of lasting value. The author's theories and research on each of the 3 components of DRIVE - autonomy, mastery & purpose - are impressive in depth and scope. The summaries and recommended reading at the end are very useful. I have gifted this book to several friends. Highly recommended for the modern professionals.

Fantastic !

Loved reading this book. I had heard the content many times on the TED talk by Dan, but never thought about reading the book length version. Hats off to Dan for the amount of research he has done on the subject. The book can be read pretty fast, also towards the end, there are quite many pages summarizing the material from the initial chapters, and also a [sort of] 'self test'. Overall, an enjoyable and interesting read.
