Education And Social Change

Sociology is a new social science. Sociology of education is one of the most recent sub-areas of Sociology. Although early educationists like Socrates, Quintilian, Alebard, Pestalozzi, Froebel and Thomas Arnold had stressed upon the social aspects of education in their speeches and writings, yet it was only towards the close of the 20th century that a formal study of the sociology of education began to interst educationists and sociologists. Among the educationists, William T. Harris, the United States Commissioner of Education, was the first to emphasize that education must be based on sociology.
About Author :
Professor S.P. Ruhela (born 1935) holds the qualifications of M.A., Ph.D. and D.Litt in Sociology, M.Ed. and Certificate in Commonwealth Education (U.K.). He has been teaching Sociology since 1961. He worked as Lecturer in Sociology at the Raj Rishi College, Alwar (1961-66), Lecturer in Sociology of Education in the Department of Foundations of Education, N.C.E.R.T. New Delhi (1966-69), Reader in education (Sociology) and then Professor of Education (1983-2000) at the Jamia University, New Delhi till 2000.
