    Buy this book for covering most of Solid state physics (Grads) or Condensed matter physics (post grads) it's language is lucid and very well explained. It's comprehensive and I feel it more helping than Kittel. It can be well understood by anyone with little or no knowledge on solid state. However you need to know basic mathematical physics if you want to cover this on your own (Differential calculus, matrices, curvilinear coordinate etc)
