A B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT, Kanpur, he has M.S. in Design from University of California, Berkeley, USA. He worked as a Design Engineer in Los Angeles for over 2 years. In 1976, he obtained his Ph.D in Mechanics of Solids from Brown University, USA.
