Flipkart Official Review

The story starts and ends in a one-bedroom-hall-kitchen apartment in Mahim, Bombay. Imelda Mendes Em to her children (Em being Mother/Mom) keeps her family on its toes, with her humour, her candour, sometimes her love, her words and with her mental state of mind. The husband nurtures her and is there by her side, while the son and the daughter go through phases of happiness and sadness, so much so that they often wish to die.

The novel is narrated by the son as he makes sense of the unconditional love his father, The Big Hoom had for his mother, Em. Em and the Big Hoom speaks of love in a very different manner. For his first novel, Jerry Pinto has taken care not to make it clichd or for that matter sentimental, though it speaks of madness and disjointed family ties.

Jerry Pintos writing is frank and in-your-face. He does not mince words and that works wonderfully, thereby adding the much needed comic relief at times. For me more than Em, it was the Big Hooms character that added all the intrigue and empathy the silent rock in the background, always there and taking care of the family from falling apart. The past and the present (50s and the 80s), which add to the atmosphere of the book. Jerry Pinto sure has come a long way before writing this one and one can notice that in his reading.

Descirption

Set in Bombay during the last decades of the twentieth century, Em and The Big Hoom tells the compelling story of the Mendeses mother, father, daughter and son. Between Em, the beedi - smoking, hyperactive mother, driven frequently to hospital by her mania and failed suicide attempts, and The Big Hoom, the rock-solid, dependable father, trying to hold things together as best he can, they are an extraordinary family.

Filled with endearing and eccentric characters, and marked by sparkling dialogue and restrained emotion, this is one of the most powerful and moving novels to be published in India in a long time.

The title is opaque at first glance. It acquires meaning only after one has gone through the book.

A delightful portrait of a middleclass Christian family comprising of parents and their two growing up children, the son being the narrator. At the core is the mentally afflicted mother who has episodes of lucidity alternating with depression and self-destructive tendencies. In her lucid moments she bristles with tongue-in-cheek humour and is uninhibited in her talk about sex to her barely out of teens daughter.
Plot is minimal, like Kafka's Trial and Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea. The main source of aesthetic pleasure comes from the profound ruminations on life in Jerry Pinto's delectabl...

Captivating, touching and a heartfelt novel.

Every once in a while a book comes out that touches you so profoundly, that you remain silent for a very long time after turning the last page of the book. This is one of those. This small and delicately written story of a mentally ill mother's relationship with her kids and her husband, speaks more than its pages reveal. Whats left unsaid, is equally heart wrenching. Jerry Pinto has really hit the nail with this story, his first. Not many could have finished it without having to cope with tears, at least from inside. Family bonding at its best. Different & Touching!!

I 'd like to make the following comments for other readers:
1. For those who have just started reading novels, please don't go for it. This book is for those who have read a few books and of varying themes. Not for beginners
2. Don't rush with the story. Go slow. Visualise each and every chapter as it might happen in front of your eyes.
3. If you have finished the book and didn't feel great about the story go back and read the book again. Go slower this time.

Not a conventional kind of book and avid readers should not miss it.

Intrigued!

I have personally dealt with a bipolar friend. And I could easily relate to the book. The writer has done a good job.

It is indeed a difficult task to deal with bipolar disorder. There are two phases in that a person goes through hysteresis and depression.

The way the relationships have been performed is exceptional. Dealing with a bipolar mother can be a horrifying experience. I had to deal with such a friend. I lost a great friend (gem of a heart) to a cranked up disorder. A lesson learnt, I say!

One of the best books I've read in the recent times

I bought this book out of curiosity but let me tell you honestly, you're missing out so much if you've not read this book. The story revolves around Em and how the life of her family is nailed to the spot that she is. The language is beautiful and the narration so slick! You can actually feel the kind of effort that has gone into the making of this book :). I could relate to the characters really well and yes, that's it. Beautiful book.
P.S. Special mention to that cover & book designs ! Ingenious!

Peeking into a crazy world

This book is fabulously written about the world inhabited by Mentally disturbed people. Its truly another world, which is not what people want to think about. What I couldn't digest, was the fact that death seems the only clear solution or relief for the patient. That was depressing. (View complete review)

Disturbingly beautiful.

So, what makes Em and the Big Hoom a master piece by Jerry Pinto. Is it a pure and 'from the heart' account of a child's experiences or just another piece of fiction written with beautiful words? well, for me, its both. Em and the Big Hoom will take you to a revelation trip, where god, morality,... (View complete review)
