Description

Emma is a classic novel about the perils of romance and the coming of age story of Emma Woodhouse by Jane Austen.

Summary of the Book

Emma Woodhouse is a genteel woman in Regency England. She has everything, and lacks little in her life. She prides herself in having introduced her best friend Emma Taylor to her future husband, and decides she likes matchmaking. Despite her friend George Knightley’s advice, she goes on with her new interest and tries to set Harriet Smith with Mr. Elton, the local vicar. What Emma soon discovers is that the matters of the heart are better left to the heart, and trying to force love might just burn both the people involved, and might just singe her if she stands too close. A departure from Jane Austen’s usual financially distraught heroines, Emma’s tale is more of one woman’s meddling where she is neither wanted nor required.

  • JANE AUSTEN was born on December 16, 1775, the seventh of eight children-six boys and two girls. Jane Austen began to write stories and sketches for her family at the age of 12. By 1795 she had written a comic History of the World; an unfinished novel, Catherine; and two epistolary novels, Lady Susan and Elinor and Marianne which she was later to rewrite as Sense and Sensibility. In 1807 she and her sister and mother moved to Southampton, a large seaport, and in 1809 back to Hampshire to the village of Chawton. It was at Chawton Cottage that she wrote most of her completed novels. In November 1811 her first published novel, Sense and Sensibility, appeared and was very successful. Pride and Prejudice was published in January 1813, Mansfield Park in May 1814 and Emma very early in 1816. She died in 1817,aged only 42.

Are you mad, Nicola!?

I thought Shaw's best play would be Pygmalion. But no! This one is better.
Whoever wrote the "about" section on Shaw, clearly is trying to put words into Shaw's mouth.
He is trying to nitpick Shaw's statements out of context and desperately trying to find a religious agenda to it. Some zealot. Ignore him, and enjoy the awesomely well written drama.

Arms and the Man

This delightful play of Shaw's is full of cleverly satiric references to the feudal British society and the romantic visions of war and love that the nobility have based on the literature and the theatrical arts of the time. Although it is set in the strife torn Balkans and the Serbo- Bulgarian war of 1885, the references to England of the time are unmistakable. The characters of the idealistic and aristocratic Raina and the pragmatic but hopelessly romantic Swiss soldier, Bluntschli, pave th...
