The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Non-Fiction 2011, is Siddhartha Mukherjee’s most famous work. The book is an insightful account of cancer and the persistent fight of humans against it from the viewpoint of a doctor, researcher and an award-winning science writer. The book is even more profound with the meticulousness of a cellular biologist, the outlook of a historian, and the passion of a biographer.

    Summary of the Book

The Emperor of All Maladies is a remarkably persuasive and moving account of a disease that humans have perished from and have been living with, for more than five thousand years. It is the story of human ingenuity, spirit and relentless persistence. It also discusses excessive pride and misunderstanding, leveraged against a disease that was said to be beaten three decades ago. Siddhartha Mukherjee talks about discoveries, hitches, successes and harms documented over centuries - from the times of the Persian Queen Atossa, whose Greek slave had to cut off her breast, to the nineteenth-century recipient of emerging radiation treatments and chemotherapy. Mukherjee also describes the story of his leukaemia patient, Carla, along with the tales of other people who have fought through all the harmful, painful, and vigorous tests and treatments to live. The book also offers a hopeful glance into the prospects of cancer treatments in the future. The Emperor of All Maladies presents new, knowledgeable standpoints on the way scientists, philosophers, doctors, and lay readers have studied and understood the human body and the ailments it is sensitive to, for ages.

    An Erudite's Evening Pleasure

This book is precisely what it states, it lugs you through an epic journey towards the discovery of cancer,it's varieties and its cure. It traces through the cancer landscape, its highs and lows, the battle, the petitions and the litigations in the era of War on Cancer in the nineteenth century. A parallel plot trudges the authors emotions and affiliation with some of his patients and his morbid experience as a medical intern at Massachusetts General.

    Doctor's work for a layman

please don't get intimidated by Dr Mukherjee's degrees and experience. He has written this book keeping the layman too in mind. It is a great narrative of cancer's history, with necessary names and dates. The only thing to be desired is better timeline as you may get confused at some points. It is a must read so as to know how some doctors have toiled to find a remedy for cancer. Invest your time in it, returns are assured.

    Solid Read

Great flow, a clinical as well as human description of a disease whose horror cannot be measured in numbers. The author presents enough statistics as well as stories of people who fought with, and lost/won against the Disease.

However, the author could have focused more on non-USA cases as well (in the disease's recent history, almost all the examples considered are from the USA)

All in all, it's a great primer for anyone who is interested in finding out more about cancer.

    Great read

The delivery came in 3 days and I am still reading it.
The story flows smoothly and it is impressive that something such as a disease like cancer has been made accessible in non-fiction literature through such candid, yet informative writing.

Slight glitch though not very important is that I didn't get the cover that is there on the product page, but that's inconsequential.

An excellent book for people who want to know about this disease

This book is an excellent read and would be equally appealing to the medical fraternity as well as the non-medical people who would like to know more about this disease. I am not sure if any other author has been able to write anything on a subject as glum as cancer in a more engrossing and interesting way. Hats off to Sid Mukherjee.

    Reads well, Informative

Very well written book. Reads like a story and not like a text book, but very informative all the same. Could not put it down. The ending is a bit tame and sudden - I expected it to go on....Vastly improves your knowledge of cancer and how its treatment evolved over the years. I lost two of my family members to cancer, and after reading this book, I think my understanding of the disease is far better.
