The Emperor of All Maladies : A Biography of Cancer (Paperback) Price: Rs.1770

Cancer is one of a handful of human ailments that continue to elude us. The modern age is plagued with news of rising cancer rates, all kinds of possible man-made causes and a constant stream of potential miracle cures. In the course of his investigations into cancer, however, Siddhartha Mukherjee discovered that it is an ancient illness, which endured for centuries as a private matter, swaddled in secrecy and shame. Peering beyond the screen he saw that every generation had imagined cancer uniquely, and made its own desperately inventive attempt to find a cure. It is only over recent generations that cancer has morphed into one of the most public and politically scrutinised diseases of our era.

Mukherjee delves into the larger history of cancer. How old is it? When did the battle against it begin? How have we - as a society - dealt with its challenge? How have we imagined the disease and what forces have we marshalled against it? Essentially: where are we in the war against cancer? What, if anything, have we won so far, and what have we lost?

Cancer is a survivor: it changes, it adapts, it evolves, it grows. It is so close to us in biology that, in destroying it, we often destroy ourselves. The quest for the 'cure' for cancer has gradually transformed into a lodestone quest, the yardstick of our scientific and medical progress. This book is the story of that quest.

Cancer - everything you wanted to know

When I first heard about Siddhartha Mukherjee??????s Emperor of Maladies, I avoided the book as it is all about cancer. I have a personal reason for this. I saw at close quarters my own father suffer and succumb to this dreaded disease in 1975.
I subsequently heard that this book also won Guardian first book prize. I had second thoughts. There must be something in this book. A book that may be just for medical students cannot win Pulitzer.
I read the book and I have only superlatives in praise of the book.

What is cancer? What causes it? Virus? Hereditary? Infection? Genetic disorder? Some poisonous chemicals? Or just an unresolved mystery?
Finally is cancer curable? Preventable?
Read on. You will get all the answers.

Monumental. Epic.

There's not much I can say that hasn't been said already. The amount of research that has gone into this work of great scholarship is immense. Every story, every fact, every anecdote is meticulously footnoted and referenced.

Dr. Mukherjee approaches the dreaded disease from multiple angles at multiple levels and somehow manages to come up with a beautifully written, wonderfully coherent, at times magical, literary blockbuster. I liked the historical overview he provides, putting everything in context. Paced just right, it reads like a gripping novel--only terribly true.

My only minor quibble is that the last few pages seem hastily written and rather shoddily edited. And he sometimes uses too many adjectives. But that's a minor issue, easily swept aside. This book will inform you, enlighten you, engage you, entertain you, make you laugh and cry, and make you a better person. No, I'm not joking.

The Emperor of all Remedies -MIND

I am proud to write a review of this outstanding book by an Indian ,which has portrait the mind status of cancer pt and the doctors (Oncologist) above all the western country mission against war on CANCER .
After reading the book ,i find out Indian ancestors commitment in cancer medicine are not shown, which is to be explored well by the author being an Indian and others.why not let me too try it.
Above all the current Indian scenario in cancer biology research is too poor, the reason is not lack of resource ,not lack of knowledge, but the mind status of most Indian scientist in the field...

Above all the current Indian scenario in cancer biology research is too poor, the reason is not lack of resource ,not lack of knowledge, but the mind status of most Indian scientist in the field of research in Cancer ,which is the hidden message from Indian born American.( Dr.Sidhartha) .Most cancer biologist (Researcher) foot are from western country from the first chemo drug Dr.Farber to the current targeted therapy. Why there is not even single born and brought up INDIAN commitment was not pictured in this book.???? Albeit there are great research work by an Indian in US & UK lab. WHEN you finish reading you will get the answer ....
Hats off to the author Dr,Siddhartha ..and his team and family .May all the soul RIP who has committed there life for research (cancer war)

Beautiful and well thought chapters

This book by Dr Mukherjee bought a tremendous effect on my work ethics .I work for a clinical research industry and I recognize and acknowledge this book for a in depth dive for Oncology. We participate and work in many clinical trials and majority of them are Cancer trials.
On a average cancer trials in our industry we generally check to increase the life expectancy of the patients since there are no complete cure for Cancer. There are loads of side effects on the chemothrapy and after reading this book I feel more responsible when I am heading a trial for oncology. I check all the detail...

On a average cancer trials in our industry we generally check to increase the life expectancy of the patients since there are no complete cure for Cancer. There are loads of side effects on the chemothrapy and after reading this book I feel more responsible when I am heading a trial for oncology. I check all the details again and again with great care and accuracy. Try to find a logic in more depth with the relevent Adverse events n other incidents.

This book actually drew a face for "Cancer" to me!!! I now can relate my work, knowledge and with this dreaded disease very clearly. I feel more responsible to conduct and analyze data from those trials and keep in mind the ordeal this disease has created worldwide.
I work with some top 10 pharma company in the world in their oncology trials and I have recommended this book to many of my clients and gifted too few of them as well.
Together we are still fighting against this disease and hopefully will be able to save the earth from his clutch!!!

A strongly recommended book for all those who have a thrust for knowledge and ready to dive deep with the author for the facts and figures!!!!
A gripping history of cancer and the early and current challenges the researchers and people face every day to tackle and win over the Emperor.

A must read.

A fantastic book for doctors and public health persons who have never understood study designs in detail from Community Medicine books. the story telling skill makes medical subject of cancer which is dry and upsetting also very interesting. I would rate it as the best book I have ever read in life.

Insightful text

Reads well, Informative

Very well written book. Reads like a story and not like a text book, but very informative all the same. Could not put it down. The ending is a bit tame and sudden - I expected it to go on....Vastly improves your knowledge of cancer and how its treatment evolved over the years. I lost two of m... (View complete review)
