I am proud to write a review of this outstanding book by an Indian ,which has portrait the mind status of cancer pt and the doctors (Oncologist) above all the western country mission against war on CANCER .
After reading the book ,i find out Indian ancestors commitment in cancer medicine are not shown, which is to be explored well by the author being an Indian and others.why not let me too try it.
Above all the current Indian scenario in cancer biology research is too poor, the reason is not lack of resource ,not lack of knowledge, but the mind status of most Indian scientist in the field of research in Cancer ,which is the hidden message from Indian born American.( Dr.Sidhartha) .Most cancer biologist (Researcher) foot are from western country from the first chemo drug Dr.Farber to the current targeted therapy. Why there is not even single born and brought up INDIAN commitment was not pictured in this book.???? Albeit there are great research work by an Indian in US & UK lab. WHEN you finish reading you will get the answer ....
Hats off to the author Dr,Siddhartha ..and his team and family .May all the soul RIP who has committed there life for research (cancer war)
this is the book for you. the in depth study of the nature of cancer and its treatment methods is really something. it is what ever a doctor could tell a patient about cancer... including the helplessness he feels when the end is imminent. read it if understanding cancer is what you want to do. the writing is gripping as well and does not become pedantic at any point. so once you begin, you will keep reading till the end
Read this book recently. It is a well written book about the history of the study of cancer intertwined with the stories of people who tried to understand and/or cure it and their research efforts. The author has described the people affected by cancer, the people trying to cure it and their efforts in a truly engrossing fashion.
Must read for anybody who wishes to know in the history and the current state of the "emperor of all maladies".
The best thing about the book is that it doesn't mislead you in any way. It promises to be a non-fictionalised biographical account of the the much dreaded disease called cancer and it delivers!! and how! Put together the words medical, history, biography, cancer, doctors, medical terminologies and case studies in a single book and you might argue that the book might be a bit too taxing(or boring perhaps), but not this one. It grabs your interest right at the beginning and keeps you hooked till the end. WONDERFUL!!
As much as a hypochondriac my friends tell me that I am, reading this book did scare me but at the same time it was highly informative. The book gave me goosebumps considering how unaware we are as people.. Hats off to Dr. Siddhartha for making the effort. Devoid of all the sympathy garnering incidents, the book highlights majorly on the suibject which is Cancer. The book I received was in a wonderful condition and hope to read more from the author in the future. Money well spent.
It is a book which brings you the history, the present and the future of CANCER.
The book moves around the earliest discoveries of this disease, its symptoms and cures and then moves into the present day explaining how the ttreatments matured into what they are today. It also touches the political aspects related to the ethicity of the treatments.
It finaly ends by explaining all that we know today of this deadly disease and telling us of the possible journeys which medical sceince is taking towards finding a cure for this.
What a book! Excellence! You would fall in love with cancer while reading this book. And the quality of research and facts will surprise you beyond imagination. Writer has interconnected distant points extremely well creating a huge picture about everything and anything happening in Cancer across the world. I think the book is a must read for everyone, esp. non medicos.
I picked the book after reading the profile of the author. He did not disappoint. A story told with the objectivity of a surgeon yet sensitivity of a close friend. A person who has spent his life at war with this enigmatic and deadly disease the afflicts without discrimination and kills without conscience. At no point did the book slow down. The notes were taken to the end as is the usual norm. I was not able to go through them and that was a substantial part. Looking forward to another book by Dr. Mukherjee.
What's amazing about this book is it makes - a highly complicated subject like cancer - simple and understandable to a reader like me with no medicinal or biological science background.
I thank Siddhartha Mukherjee, the author of 'The Emperor of All Maladies'for taking up a work of an epic proportion and demystifying a complex disease like cancer. I am earnestly looking forward for his next book.
Also I thank Flipkart for its prompt service as usual. Pls keep it up, don't ever let your hard-owned service standards drift apart.
There's not much I can say that hasn't been said already. The amount of research that has gone into this work of great scholarship is immense. Every story, every fact, every anecdote is meticulously footnoted and referenced.
Dr. Mukherjee approaches the dreaded disease from multiple angles at multiple levels and somehow manages to come up with a beautifully written, wonderfully coherent, at times magical, literary blockbuster. I liked the historical overview he provides, putting everything in context. Paced just right, it reads like a gripping novel--only terribly true.
My only minor quibble is that the last few pages seem hastily written and rather shoddily edited. And he sometimes uses too many adjectives. But that's a minor issue, easily swept aside. This book will inform you, enlighten you, engage you, entertain you, make you laugh and cry, and make you a better person. No, I'm not joking.
