Empire Of The Moghul: Raiders From The North is the first of five historical adventure fiction books written by Alex Rutherford, which chronicles the reign of the Moghul Empire in medieval India, starting with King Babur.

    Summary Of The Book

Empire Of The Moghul: Raiders From The North, is the first of five books in Rutherford’s Empire Of The Moghul series. It revolves around the founder of the Mughal empire, Babur and covers his life and achievements. Rutherford’s novel is based on Baburnama, Babur’s autobiography. The text examines his campaigns, his reign, his conquest of India, and the eventual loss of his kingdom.

Babur, was a descendant of Genghis Khan and Timur. He often dreamt of achieving the same glory as his ancestors, but he knew he had to begin by claiming his home region.

Babur, was the child of Umar Shaikh, ruler of the Ferghana region. In 1494, an unusual accident kills his father, leaving Babur as the heir to the throne, at just twelve years of age. Babur is steadfastly determined to rule as his ancestors once did, such as Tamburlaine, whose actions had an impact from Delhi to Persia, and all the way to Volga. However, many opposed Babur’s claim to the throne. Many factions in the kingdom began to plot against him, taking sheer advantage of his young age and inexperience. Since Ferghana was always under threat from the Uzbeks, and Shaibani Khan, many felt that Babur was inept to rule. Nevertheless, Babur and his chief bodyguard Wazir, worked together and eliminated all those who opposed his rule, including his Grand Vizier. With the support of his mother and grandmother, who were very influential in court, Babur became the rightful King of Ferghana.

After claiming the Kingdom of Ferghana, Babur’s attention turned to Samarkhand. He wanted to reconquer this city, which had once been the capital of Timur. Although Babur does capture it, the Uzbeks regain it once more. Then Babur’s attention turn towards Kabul. Eventually, he conquers a large part of India, successfully establishing his dynasty, and the Moghul Empire.

Empire Of The Moghul: Raiders From The North, was published in 2010, by Headline Review.

    A "hold-your-breath" page turner!

This series is the first time I have ever been so captivated by an author (or two in this case - under the same pen name) that I have picked up the entire series and simply gobbled it up like a ravenous person!
This narration of Babur's life makes Babur come alive. As you turn each page, you can see the child Babur, listening wide eyed to his father's stories, or the emperor Babur - caught unaware by his destiny, but quickly growing up to master the tyranny around him.
    The power of this enti...

    Excellent! ... get it.

In dry text books of history you get literal facts, the corresponding insipid dates... and objective information. Data which is cold, forbearing and soon forgotten. Here Rutherford fills in the flesh amidst the dry bones of cold history. Babur crosses the hindu kush... what he feels and thinks, what problems his troops face... how cold and difficult is the journey. Interesting detail fills up the otherwise skippable factual detail. High emotion... the why and why not litter the landscape. So ...

    history lessons refreshed....

A good history lesson, full of ups and downs. Babur’s story told with a good pace. How he founded the first mughal dynasty and how the word itself came. The story has a good pace and a good one time read. Leaves enough interest to catch the next book . A good brush up in the history lessons studied a long time ago in school.

Gripping tale of a determined emporer

Excellent book to read, certainly a page turner. The best part is, it takes you back in time to the world of Timurs and hence a great stress buster.
Some takeaways are Babur's trait to adapt, relationships with his family (esp. Easan Dawlat, K. Nigar and later Khanzada), his subtle leadership skills, ability to read a situation especially during his Hindustan days, knack to choose right commanders for his conquests and finally his unwavering determination to believe in his destiny and shape ...

"Historical Fiction" which you can't afford to miss out.

A good book to read but not keeping history in mind. Though this is historically correct, but this is not a history textbook. Some important characters are fictitious and no relevance to actual characters from history. If i were to give the book the liberty of a being a novel then would say it is a very good read for the "historical fiction" lover.

It talks about the story of Babur, how he at the age of 12 became the king of his father's kingdom, how he managed to win and lost Samarkand (Thr...

The Beginning of a Great Serise

The first book is all about Babur and his conquest.

The Moghul empire was forged after great hardships faced by Babur. His excellent leadership skills and ability to think beyond the ordinary is very well captured in the book. Even the picturesque descriptions of Kabul and adjoining areas is extremely well done.

If anyone picks up this book, i would recommend them to go for the entire series.

    Awesome Read

It is certainly one that you can pick up anyday and finish at one go. Interesting to read for anyone who has a penchant for history. The author has really done a good job with the research bit and put in some bits of his own in describing the times of Babur. The book brings alive the world he lived in and gives the reader a better understanding of how things unfurled 500 years back and how the history of "Hindustan" changed forever.
I finished it in 2 days flat, going for the second one now. ...

    Couldnt have been written better!

Awesome book with little room for any drab. It hooks you and you can never let it go. The book is elegantly written with every event described to the detail that you would be traveling with the characters and incidents as they happen - your mood shifting from gloom to ecstasy to fear to thrill. The book also takes the privilege of having kept the history untouched. A must read epic! Some of the characters you would admire through-out the book are Zahiruddin Babur, Wazir Khan, Shaibani Khan, B...
