Empire of the Moghul: Raiders From the North (English) (Hardcover) Price: Rs.395

The first book in the Empire of the Moghul series: chronicling the rise and fall of the Moghul rulers of India, beginning with Babur who swept in from Central Asia to found one of the most powerful dynasties in history.

1494, and the new ruler of Ferghana, twelve-year-old Babur, faces a seemingly impossible challenge. Babur is determined to equal his great ancestor, Tamburlaine, whose conquests stretched from Delhi to the Mediterranean, from wealthy Persia to the wild Volga. But he is dangerously young to inherit a crown and treasonous plots, tribal rivalries, rampaging armies and ruthlessly ambitious enemies will threaten his destiny, his kingdom, even his survival.

Excellent! ... get it.

In dry text books of history you get literal facts, the corresponding insipid dates... and objective information. Data which is cold, forbearing and soon forgotten. Here Rutherford fills in the flesh amidst the dry bones of cold history. Babur crosses the hindu kush... what he feels and thinks, what problems his troops face... how cold and difficult is the journey. Interesting detail fills up the otherwise skippable factual detail. High emotion... the why and why not litter the landscape. So much so you end up feeling sorry for Babur when he reminces about his friends and family whom he has... ()

So much so you end up feeling sorry for Babur when he reminces about his friends and family whom he has lost and the simple free life he once lived.
It could have been more detailed at the probable cost of becoming heavy??? but the author maintains a excited read at the cost of a more beautific (and hence limited) read.
Rutherford maintains a balance between drama and fact... going into characters and happenings to an extent to make them interesting, but at the same time letting them remain credible.
A very nice book and a thrilling one, where every page is a turner. The narrative seldom if ever slacks and you would get a basic historical insight as a bonus.
I finished this one yesterday night and am expecting the next (brother in arms) by afternoon today. A nice touch of superb delivery by flipkart.

Disheartening

I had ordered Empire of the Moghul: Raiders from the North with such excitement that's inexplicable.I absolutely love historical and mythological reads. The book was delivered as informed and I was so happy to have got it.However, that is where EVERYTHING GOOD ENDED.

As I immersed myself into the gripping chronicle, I couldn't help but notice that the quality of pages wasn't upto the mark. Saddened as I was, today I was completely shaken by what happened next. The books' binding gave away leaving behind loose pages.

Couldn't help but lament on the condition of my first book of the quintet...

Couldn't help but lament on the condition of my first book of the quintet. Having done so well in the past I can only complain for my collection now has a book thats HALF BOUND and hence HALF SPECIAL.

Grows old

This is a tale that starts off well, with vivid descriptions of the people, the area and the action. However, it is a tale that grows weary with repetition as time progresses and you grow a bit disenchanted. By the end, I was just waiting for the end to come so that I could finish what I had started.

It's an interesting tale, but one that drags on as well.

Won't recommend it to others

It was an impulse buy. I have always been looking out for dramatized history wherever available, and a series on Mughal empire was inviting. However the read turned out to be very boring and at times lengthy. The narration and choice of words are very amateurish and I have ended up tossing it aside many a times. Not exactly a page turner for a best seller. Won't recommend it to others.

Underwhelming.

The plot and timeline makes for a potential bestselling epic, but Rutherford's writing fails to keep it all together. I quit reading halfway because it got too stale and underwhelming. Money and time not well spent.

So, if you want literary satisfaction, buy something else. If you want to try something different from the others in the genre, go ahead, you might have a different experience.

Cheers.

Reliving History Again

This book makes you relive history again. Babur is phenomenal here and what really makes him stand out is the narration. I would love to watch a film made on this book. (View complete review)

Historical Masterpiece

I started reading this book reluctantly worrying that this might be boring but as i progressed through the pages i became absorbed in this book. The writer (i think its fictional name) has presented this book in an interesting way .
The whole life story of Babur is present in this book and after...
