The book in the quintet is as absorbing as the previous two. however, akbar's account appear to have been abridged in as much as many events of his life seem to have been omitted. for eg, there is no mention of the legendary jewels of his court--- tansen or birbal. even abdul rahim has not been mentioned who apart from being an able general and a literay genius was also the son of akbar's regent, bairam khan. there is no mention of rana pratap even though the battle of haldighati is vividly described. perhaps akbar's long reign of 50 yrs had too many events for them all to be ensconsed in a book. nevertheless, the true character of akbar, as a general, an administrator, as an empire builder and as a wise and benevolent ruler comes out very well. kudos to alex rutherford. will wait for the fourth book ' a kingdom divided' on jehangir.
This book is the 3rd of an amazing attempt to chronicle the Moghul rulers. Considering that it is about the most illustrious of them all - Akbar and there would be so much literature readily available for research, the author might have been challenged selecting what to put in the plot and what to omit.
Anyone who has read the 1st book on Babur will obviously be slightly disappointed with the next 2 books because the battle scenes, the description of the scenic landscapes, harem women or clothing and food has become repetitive in the sequels.
Nevertheless, fans like me owe it to Alex Rutherford for attempting a decent chronicling of some of the legendary warrior kings who have shaped India.
Its a must read for anyone who is interested in knowing the real history of Moguls.. I am following his series starting from Babur till this.. I feel that the narration gets you to closest it can to reality. The simple english really makes it easier even for children to read it. Hats of to u Alex to pull up another extra ordinary Art....
U are not an author but an Artist for me who makes writing look as beautiful as painting.
PLEASE RELEASE THE NEXT ONE ON JAHANGIR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE..........................
First of all, kudos to the husband-wife duo who write under the pen name of alex rutherford for bringing to life the moghul empire of India. About the ruler of the world, the book is mostly a look at Akbar's life through his son's narration. Its well written and quite enjoyable. However, a lot of Akbar's reforms, and there were quite a few ranging from administration, taxing, cultural, lietrature, have been left out and it looks more at the personal viewpoint of a son. However, if you've read the previous two books you will not be disappointed by this one. The might of Akbar has indeed been portarayed. Its just written differently.
This is the third of the set of books on the Mughals, and as with the previous two, the duo which writes under the pen name of Alex Rutherford, have done a great job of combining history with narrative fiction. They have painted a very realistic and vivid picture of Akbar’s reign over mughal India and the life of the royal court, eventually ending in a struggle for succession between Salim (Jehangir) and Salim’s son, Khusrau. Jehangir prevailed, as we all know. This was a very quick paced book and I truly enjoyed it.
